Job summary

Santa Fe Community College is seeking a Line Cook for the SFCC Early Childhood Center to prepare and cook a variety of meals in line with CACFP and ECECD standards. You will ensure timely service to meet children’s nutritional needs.

Typical hours are 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with potential evenings or weekends for deadlines and events. No experience required; bilingual in English-Spanish is preferred. A Food Handler Card must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with CACFP and ECECD guidelines for meal prep and distribution.
  • Prepare meals and snacks on schedule, including for children with dietary restrictions.
  • Manage inventory, storage, and kitchen cleanliness.
  • Receive and verify food deliveries, store items properly, and control waste.
  • Draft weekly menus and shopping lists; assist with budget reviews.
  • Attend required training and support SFCC’s Strategic Plan.

Position Summary The Line Cook prepares and cooks a variety of food items for the SFCC Early Childhood Center in accordance with Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Early Childhood Education & Care Department (ECECD) standards. Ensure all food items are prepared and served in a timely manner to meet the nutritional needs of children.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Complies with childcare food preparation and distribution standards in accordance with guidelines and training protocols.
  • Ensures the timely and accurate preparation of meals and snacks to meet the nutritional needs of children, including special meals for children with food sensitivities and allergies using a stove, oven, fryer, or grill.
  • Maintains proper storage and organization of food inventories to ensure freshness and compliance with health standards.
  • Maintains the cleaning, sanitation, and organization of kitchen, walk-in coolers, and storage areas to provide a safe working space.
  • Skilled in production, service, staffing, and operations of food, and beverage services.
  • Proposes menus for daily snacks and lunches on a weekly basis and submits to supervisor for nutritional content and budget review.
  • Prepares weekly shopping list to support approved menus and purchases items.
  • Prepares snacks and lunches to be served on schedule identified by supervisor.
  • Record the distribution of proper food measurements on a daily basis to comply with local and state requirements.
  • Cleans and maintains kitchen area in a sanitary, safe, and organized manner according to CACFP State regulations.
  • Receive food deliveries from vendors, verify items, and properly store food and supplies.
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Working hours may include evenings, holidays, or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events.
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions.
  • Supports the values and institutional goals as defined in the College’s Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to perform measurement necessary in cooking for large groups. Ability to maintain a safe and sanitary food preparation area. Ability to relate to and work effectively with staff and young children. Ability to be flexible and adjust to many varied situations. Ability to maintain appropriate and professional behavior at all times. Ability to work under pressure with multiple interruptions and meet deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to communicate effectively in a diverse, multicultural community environment. Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills.

No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual in English-Spanish is preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Must possess or obtain a Food Handler Card within thirty (30) days from date of hire.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

The position requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and grasping while preparing meals, serving food, cleaning, and maintaining kitchen and storage areas. The employee will frequently lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 50 pounds and will occasionally handle items weighing more than 50 pounds, using assistance or appropriate equipment as needed. The employee must be able to work safely around hot equipment, cold storage areas, cleaning chemicals, and other typical commercial kitchen conditions.

Schedule Designation

This role is located on campus at Santa Fe Community College. Typically, 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
