The City of Ann Arbor is seeking a lab technician for a temporary position lasting up to 9 months. The role involves collecting samples, operating laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Ideal candidates will possess a High School diploma and a valid driver's license, with the ability to work flexible hours up to 29 per week.
Work Schedule: up to 29 hours a week (Flexible hours outside of the required 7:30-10:30 schedule)
This is a temporary position and can last for no more than 9 months
Role Summary:
Collecting and preparing samples from various sources for laboratory analyses, preparing media, buffers, solutions, and reagents required in analysis, operating and maintaining sampling apparatus and laboratory equipment, assisting laboratory staff with their duties, receiving, issuing, and maintaining records of laboratory equipment and supplies, compiling and maintaining laboratory data records, cleaning, preparing, and sterilizing facilities, materials, and equipment for laboratory work, conducting basic laboratory testing using hand-held meters, and ensuring all work complies with laboratory safety practices, the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and the City of Ann Arbor policies and procedures.

Physical abilities include driving, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and performing repetitive motions.
Employees may need to mix chemicals, work with biological contaminants using protective equipment, monitor objects and data to ensure safety, and measure volumes with calibrated instruments. Lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs., bending, and stooping to retrieve samples are common tasks, often performed outside in varying weather conditions. Walking over uneven surfaces, climbing ladders and stairs, distinguishing colors for chemical tests, responding to alarms, and possibly entering and exiting boats or operating motor vehicles may be required. The role may involve standing or sitting for extended periods with mobility as needed.
