Job description


GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general direction from the supervisor, leads a shift or team to perform preanalytic and post-analytic specimen and order processing including training and
oversight of other lab assistants. Oversees the staff with established procedures, to
perform a variety of routine laboratory procedures and support services according to
the assigned laboratory section.



PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates a high level of competency in performing all Laboratory Assistant
duties that are relevant to the assigned location
2. May instruct patients and health care staff in proper specimen collection and
handling methods. According to established protocols, guidelines, and policies,
demonstrates exceptional customer service skills in communicating with internal
and external customers
3. Creates laboratory order entry consistent with established procedures. Prepares
patient specimens for laboratory testing with emphasis on the pre-analytic and
post-analytic processes
4. Investigates and resolves problems associated with requests for testing, customer
billing and reporting. Seeks information as needed from information systems,
members of the laboratory staff, and other sources
5. Within established parameters, and with appropriate competency training and
supervisor approval, may perform CLIA waived tests. Following successful
completion of competency assessment, may perform specimen processing,
testing, and reporting without direct supervision



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. High school graduate or equivalent
2. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate clearly.
Demonstrated reliability and a self-starter
3. Demonstrates a high level of competency in performing all Laboratory Assistant duties
that are relevant to the assigned location. Must be competent and experienced in preanalytic specimen activities to include the effective teaching and mentoring of others
4. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory services is desirable
