Job summary

Virginia Department of Education seeks a Director of Information Technology to lead technology systems and initiatives in support of the Superintendent and senior leaders. The role focuses on directing IT strategy, governance, and operations to advance DOE priorities.

The position requires strong leadership, project management, and SDLC expertise, with a preference for experience in educational data analytics and managing large-scale technology programs.

Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of educational technology design and implementation.
• Strong program and project management with deep tech understanding.
• Procure, set up, organize, track, and manage technology assets.
• Lead and manage teams to deliver programs and outcomes.
• Strategic planning to keep systems on budget and delivering value.
• Explain technical concepts to varied audiences; strong SDLC skills.
• Experience with educational data and data analytics.

Responsibilities

• Clarify goals and provide frequent, constructive feedback to staff.
• Coordinate necessary approvals (VITA, Procurement, CSRM) for technology use.
• Define regression testing, UAT, and automated testing approaches.
• Keep data models/ERDs, data dictionaries, and metadata repositories up-to-date.
• Define and pursue a future technology vision and achievable path for the agency.
