Job summary

The State of New Hampshire is seeking a Telecommunications Technician I for the NH DOT, based in Concord. The role involves skilled work installing, maintaining, and repairing radio transmitting/receiving equipment statewide.

Education/experience can substitute for each other; a valid driver’s license and MVR check are required. Training and documentation duties are also part of the job.

Qualifications

• Equivalent combination of 2.5 years of education and experience after high school in radio engineering, installation or maintenance, electronics, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Participates in and supervises removal, installation, repair, calibration, and testing of Mobile Radio Equipment in NH DOT vehicles and related assets.
• Installs mountain-top radio repeater stations, conducts site surveys, orders materials, and oversees tower installation and testing.
• Performs recalibration and preventive maintenance on mountain-top repeaters to ensure reliability.
• Operates test instruments to diagnose equipment malfunctions and determine repairs.
• Maintains inventories and records of NH DOT radio equipment and locations.
• Develops and manages vehicle radio removal/install schedules with NH DOT agencies.

SUMMARY

To supervise and perform skilled communication systems technician work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of NH DOT radio transmitting and receiving equipment

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Equivalent combination of 2.5 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in radio engineering, installation or maintenance, electronics, communications or related filed.

License/Certification: Valid driver's license

Other Requirements: Applicants’ Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency. Applicants are subject to a New Hampshire criminal record background check. Trainee Option: Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A technical certificate in telecommunications, electronics, radio communications, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of radio frequency (RF) principles and telecommunications standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participates in and supervises the removal, installation, repair, calibration, and testing of Mobile Radio Equipment in NH DOT vehicles and related assets to ensure reliable statewide intra-DOT mobile voice communications.
• Installs mountain-top radio repeater stations, including conducting site surveys and selections, recommending and ordering appropriate materials and components, overseeing tower installation, and performing testing to optimize system performance and coverage.
• Performs recalibration and preventive maintenance on mountain-top repeater stations (excluding receiver/transmitter units) to ensure station reliability, longevity, and optimal operation.
• Operates and analyzes test instruments such as Bird Wattmeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators to diagnose equipment malfunctions and determine necessary repairs.
• Maintains accurate inventories and records of all NH DOT radio equipment, ensuring accountability and precise tracking of equipment locations.
• Develops and manages vehicle radio removal and installation schedules in coordination with all NH DOT agencies to ensure efficient, timely, and coordinated radio system upgrades and maintenance.
