We are seeking a highly skilled Telecommunication Engineer – Fiber Design to join our Utility Telecommunications Engineering team. In this role, you will support the planning, design, and implementation of fiber optic infrastructure to enable reliable, secure, and scalable communications across our utility network. You will be responsible for developing detailed fiber network designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and coordinating with multi‑disciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality, construction‑ready design packages.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer fiber optic networks for utility communications, including backbone, feeder, and distribution systems.
  • Develop detailed design drawings, fiber routing, and splice plans using GIS, CAD, and other design tools.
  • Conduct route analysis, permitting review, site surveys, pole loading coordination, and constructability reviews.
  • Prepare bills of materials (BOM), cost estimates, engineering documentation, and technical specifications.
  • Collaborate closely with internal engineering, field operations, construction management, and external contractors.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable NESC, NEC, utility standards, permitting requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Support project lifecycle—from concept through construction, commissioning, and close‑out.
  • Maintain accurate records, as‑built documentation, and design revisions.
  • Monitor technology trends and recommend solutions to improve network reliability and performance.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years experience in fiber network engineering or utility telecommunications.
  • Proficiency with GIS systems, AutoCAD/MicroStation, and fiber design software tools.
  • Strong knowledge of fiber optic standards, equipment, splicing, and construction methods.
  • Understanding of NESC standards and utility right‑of‑way considerations.
  • Excellent technical documentation, analytical, and project coordination skills.

Preferred:

  • Utility or power‑grid telecommunications design experience.
  • Familiarity with make‑ready engineering and pole attachment permitting.
  • Experience with OTDR, fiber testing standards, and optical equipment specs.
  • PE or EIT certification (or working toward one).
  • Strong problem‑solving and technical analysis.
  • Detail‑oriented design execution.
  • Effective communication and teamwork.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Commitment to safety and quality standards.
