Overview

Our Utility Client in Downtown, NYC needs a GIS System Analyst with Telecom experience for a 12+ month role. Hybrid expectation – 3 days in the office, 2 remote for a 40 hour week.

The GIS System Analyst will play a key role in supporting Client's telecommunication and data network infrastructure by creating, migrating, and maintaining geospatial data. This position will leverage Ericsson GIS Software to ensure accuracy and efficiency in mapping and connectivity records. A critical responsibility includes evaluating Map Based GIS applications for potential future upgrades of the Ericsson Network Engineer Map Based GIS platform, ensuring the system remains scalable, reliable, and aligned with organizational needs.

Position Purpose

The GIS System Analyst position exists to strengthen Client's ability to manage and modernize its telecommunication and data network infrastructure. By maintaining accurate geospatial records, supporting data migration, and ensuring the integrity of fiber and connectivity documentation, this role directly contributes to operational efficiency and reliability. In addition, the analyst will be responsible for evaluating Map Based GIS applications to guide the future upgrade of the Ericsson Network Engineer Map Based GIS platform, ensuring the company remains equipped with advanced tools to meet evolving business and technology needs.

Key Outcomes
  • Accurate geospatial records: Ensure all telecommunication and network infrastructure data is correctly migrated, updated, and maintained.
  • Improved operational efficiency: Deliver timely updates to fiber records, circuit layout records, and connectivity documentation.
  • Successful GIS application upgrades: Provide thorough evaluation and recommendations for future upgrades of the Ericsson Network Engineer Map Based GIS application.
  • Enhanced data integrity: Maintain high standards of database accuracy, consistency, and reliability across all GIS systems.
  • Effective reporting: Generate clear, actionable maps and reports that support decision-making across IT and engineering teams.
  • Cross-team collaboration: Communicate GIS insights effectively to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Responsibilities
Data Migration & Infrastructure
  • Perform data conversion and migration for Client's existing telecommunication and data network infrastructure.
  • Migrate data for supporting network infrastructure such as manholes, service boxes, vaults, poles, towers, buildings, trenches, and conduits.
  • Build data for Outside Plant (OSP) fiber cables, inner ducts, and cable splices.
  • Build data for Inside Plant (ISP) fiber cables, cable risers, floor plans, room layouts, cabinet/relay rack layouts, and telecommunication and network equipment rack elevations.
  • Migrate and build data for network equipment connectivity and Circuit Layout Records (CLR).
Mapping & Analysis
  • Review, generate, revise, and update land maps using GIS platforms.
  • Compile geographic data from various sources, including censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps.
  • Enter new map data using digitizers or direct input of coordinate information, applying principles of cartography such as coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales.
  • Analyze geographic relationships among different types of data.
  • Generate reports and maps using the GIS database system.
Application Development & Evaluation
  • Build and upgrade new GIS applications, including software and database upgrades.
  • Evaluate Map Based GIS applications for future upgrade of the Ericsson Network Engineer Map Based GIS application.
Research & Data Integrity
  • Conduct research to locate and obtain existing databases.
  • Ensure database integrity and maintain accuracy across all GIS systems.
Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
  • Experience with GIS (ESRI ArcGIS and Ericsson Network Engineer Map Based GIS preferred).
  • Previous experience in GIS or AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of mapping underground and aerial telecommunication infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and understand underground/aerial schematic diagrams, telecommunication network connectivity, and Circuit Layout Records.
  • Excellent computer skills with the ability to maintain existing databases and ensure database integrity.
Telecommunication Knowledge
  • Understanding of telecommunication network and connectivity infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) fiber infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of geography, including methods for describing the location and distribution of land, sea, and air masses.
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
  • Strong analytical skills to solve problems using GIS tools.
  • Systems evaluation skills to assess system performance accurately.
  • Information gathering skills to find, identify, and validate essential information.
  • Ability to follow rules to arrange things or actions in a specific order.
Communication & Collaboration Skills
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral, and cartographic) to convey GIS/spatial information to non-GIS/technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across IT, engineering, and contractor teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Geography, Geospatial Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Professional certifications such as GISP (Certified GIS Professional) or Esri Technical Certification.
  • Advanced experience with Ericsson Network Engineer Map Based GIS and ESRI ArcGIS platforms.
  • Demonstrated expertise in telecommunication network infrastructure projects, including fiber design and mapping.
  • Experience leading GIS application upgrades or system migrations in enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with database management systems (SQL, Oracle, or similar) for geospatial data.
  • Strong background in cartography and spatial analysis with proven ability to deliver actionable insights.
  • Prior experience collaborating with cross-functional IT and engineering teams on large-scale infrastructure projects.
