Work may be performed independently or under varying levels of supervision and includes outside plant fiber work and connecting broadband services to AEP infrastructure.This role requires work on or near electrical transmission and distribution systems using bucket trucks, ladders, and climbing structures. Strict adherence to AEP safety standards, including PPE and Minimum Approach Distance (MAD), is required.Employees are expected to demonstrate expert-level technical knowledge, independently resolve complex issues, and lead, coordinate, and support the development of other team members.Job Description** The successful candidate must live or be willing to relocate at their own expense within a 45 minute reporting time of the Pikeville Service Center, 3249 North Mayo Trail Pikeville, KY 41501.**What you’ll do:Essential Job Functions & TasksPerform advanced to expert installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of overhead and underground fiber optic systemsLead complex troubleshooting, testing, and system diagnosticsOperate bucket trucks, aerial devices, and service vehiclesPerform complex fiber splicing, testing, and connectivity workLead and coordinate work activities; provide technical guidance and training to team membersInspect, maintain, and ensure safe use of tools, vehicles, and equipmentMaintain accurate records, reports, and system documentationFollow and reinforce all AEP safety policies and proceduresWhat we’re looking for:Must have completed Telecommunications Fiber Specialist‑B requirements (or equivalent) and demonstrate:Work within the electrical supply space on AEP’s distribution polesAdvanced to expert proficiency operating aerial lifts and related equipmentExpert-level troubleshooting and fault resolution skillsStrong knowledge of rigging, line work, and equipment handlingProper use and inspection of protective equipment (gloves, sleeves, blankets, etc.)Ability to lead emergency and rescue proceduresAdvanced to expert knowledge of:Fiber optic installation, splicing, testing, and maintenanceBroadband systems and telecom infrastructure (where applicable)AC/DC power systems and electrical environmentsMinimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED requiredTechnical degree or telecom experience preferredMust have successfully performed duties of Telecommunications Fiber Specialist‑B (or equivalent)Valid driver’s license requiredValid Class A CDL requiredAdditional RequirementsStrong commitment to safety, teamwork, and professionalismAdvanced telecommunications/electronics aptitudeAbility to travel, work overtime, and operate company vehicles (including off‑road)Ability to progress within the job classification structure (“up or out”)Must pass a physical abilities assessmentCapable of directing and overseeing work of less experienced employeesPhysical RequirementsPhysical Demand: HeavyPerform physically demanding work similar to Fiber Specialist‑B / Line Mechanic rolesOperate heavy equipment and vehiclesClimb poles, use ladders, and work at heightsLift and carry tools and equipment up to 60 lbsWork outdoors in varying conditions on overhead and underground systems In addition to a competitive compensation, AEP offers a unique comprehensive benefits package that aims to support and enhance the overall well-being of our employees.At AEP, we’re more than just an energy company — we’re a team of dedicated professionals committed to delivering safe, reliable, and innovative energy solutions.
