Job summary

Kern County invites qualified candidates for the Technology Services Supervisor role within the Information Technology Services Department. The selection includes an oral examination and a structured qualification process to assess training, education, experience, and leadership capability.

Applicants must meet the minimum education and experience requirements and attain a passing score on each phase of the exam. A valid California driver’s license is required at appointment.

• Bachelor’s degree with CS/MIS units and 3 years of full-time experience in programming, systems analysis & design, telecommunications or network administration; one year in lead/project management.
• Alternative: 60 semester or 90 quarter units with CS/MIS units and 5 years of experience in the same areas; lead/project management year required.
• Alternative: accredited technical/vocational CS/IT training with 5 years of experience; at least one year in lead/project management.
• Alternative: 7 years of full-time paid experience in the listed areas with one year in lead/project management.

Examinations

Oral Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of appraising training, education, experience, interest and personal fitness for the position.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the exam process.

The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant an oral examination.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, including fifteen (15) semester or twenty-five (25) quarter units in computer science or management information systems AND three (3) years of full-time paid experience in programming, systems analysis and design, telecommunications, and/or network administration, one (1) year of which must have been in a lead or project management position in a network, application development, or telecommunications environment.

OR

Completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university, including fifteen (15) semester or twenty-five (25) quarter units in computer science or management information systems AND five (5) years of full-time paid experience in programming, systems analysis and design, telecommunications, and/or network administration, one (1) year of which must have been in a lead or project management position in a network, application development, or telecommunications environment.

OR

Completion of an accredited technical or vocational training program in computer science, computer office automation technology, computer systems technology or closely related field AND five (5) years of full-time paid experience in programming, systems analysis and design, telecommunications, and/or network administration, one (1) year of which must have been in a lead or project management position in a network, application development, or telecommunications environment.

OR

Seven (7) years of full-time paid experience in programming, systems analysis and design, telecommunications, and/or network administration, one (1) year of which must have been in a lead or project management position in a network, application development, or telecommunications environment.

OR

Two (2) years as a Senior Systems Analyst, Telecommunications Network Administrator, Network Systems Administrator, or Local Area Network Systems Administrator in the Kern County classification system.

Qualifying experience must have been within the last eight (8) years.

Valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment.

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Information Technology Services Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
