Job summary

The University of North Dakota is seeking a part-time Technology Operations Student Employee to assist with hardware maintenance, software configuration, and front desk duties. The role focuses on hands-on hardware diagnostics and basic systems administration in a student employee capacity.

This on-campus position requires 10–20 hours per week and is non-benefited. The successful candidate will work closely with the Center for Innovation to keep office computers and related equipment running

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the university.
  • Interest in computer hardware, systems administration, or related field.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair desktop and laptop computers.
  • Experience configuring software and user settings on Windows and Mac devices.
  • Criminal History Background Check completion required.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair hardware on computers, laptops, servers, and peripherals.
  • Set up equipment and install OS/software as needed.
  • Coordinate with staff to resolve technology problems and ensure operations.
  • Install, configure, and update software and user accounts.
  • Staff front desk, handle inquiries, and assist with scheduling and data entry.

Salary/Position Classification
  • $16.00 hourly, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 10-20 hours per week
  • 100% Remote Work Availability: No
  • Hybrid Work Availability (requires some time on campus): No
Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.
The Technology Operations Student Employee will focus on the maintenance, repair, and configuration of office computers and other technology. This role is ideal for a student interested in hardware diagnostics, systems administration, and hands‑on technical work. The student will work closely with Center for Innovation staff to keep office equipment running reliably, perform repairs, and configure software and settings to meet department needs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Hardware Maintenance & Repair
    • Diagnose and repair hardware issues on computers, laptops, servers, network devices, monitors, printers, and peripherals.
    • Set up equipment for employee use, performing or ensuring proper installation of cables, operating systems, or appropriate software.
    • Coordinate with departmental staff to identify and resolve technology problems within the center to ensure smooth and continuous facility operations.
  • Software Configuration & Deployment
    • Install, configure, and update software and operating systems on computers, servers, and other hardware.
    • Configure user accounts, permissions, and settings to align with office and security requirements.
    • Set up and configure business and productivity applications for department-specific software for use.
    • Research and evaluate new software tools, providing recommendations for department-wide configuration and adoption.
  • Front Desk & Administrative Support
    • Staff the facility’s front desk, greeting visitors and directing inquiries to the appropriate individual.
    • Answer phone calls and emails, routing inquiries and requests to the correct individual.
    • Assist with scheduling events, room bookings, and calendar coordination for building members.
    • Support day-to-day office tasks such as data entry, correspondence, and preparing basic documents.
Minimum Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the university.
  • Demonstrated interest in computer hardware, systems administration, or a related field.
  • Comfortable opening, diagnosing, and repairing desktop and laptop computers.
  • Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and time‑management skills.
  • Skilled at configuring software, operating systems, and user settings on Windows and Mac devices.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain confidentiality of user information.
  • Knowledge of programming, website configuration, and computer maintenance are a plus.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
