Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Networking, Electronics Technology, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in structured cabling, telecommunications, network infrastructure, low-voltage systems, electronic security systems, or related tech support environment.
  • Ability to follow technical instructions, use basic tools and equipment, perform routine infrastructure tasks, and read/follow basic diagrams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation, labeling, organization, testing, and maintenance of structured cabling systems (CAT5/CAT6 and fiber optic).
  • Assist with cable terminations, punch-downs, connectivity testing, and basic infrastructure tasks using appropriate tools.
  • Support installation and maintenance of low-voltage infrastructure, including network cabling, patch panels, and telecom closets.
  • Assist with installation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of telecommunications equipment and related infrastructure.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed work, cable labeling, and other infrastructure activities.

Required

Associate degree in Information Technology, Computer Networking, Electronics Technology, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field; and three (3) years of experience in structured cabling, telecommunications, network infrastructure, low-voltage systems, electronic security systems, or a related technology support environment. Ability to follow technical instructions, use basic tools and equipment, perform routine technology infrastructure support tasks, and read and follow basic technical diagrams and documentation.

Purpose and Scope

The Technology Infrastructure Technician performs routine technical work involving the installation, maintenance, organization, and support of the College's technology infrastructure. This position supports structured cabling, low-voltage systems, network infrastructure, wireless connectivity, telecommunications equipment, and electronic security systems. The Technician performs assigned tasks using established procedures and contributes to the reliable operation and maintenance of campus technology infrastructure.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assists with the installation, labeling, organization, testing, and maintenance of structured cabling systems, including CAT5/CAT6 and fiber optic cabling, under established procedures and direction.

  • Assists with cable terminations, punch-downs, connectivity testing, and related basic infrastructure tasks using appropriate tools and equipment.

  • Assists with the installation and maintenance of low-voltage infrastructure, including network cabling, patch panels, equipment racks, cable management systems, and telecommunications closets.

  • Assists with the installation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of telecommunications equipment and related infrastructure.

  • Assists with the installation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of network switches, wireless access points, and other technology infrastructure equipment under the direction of the Technology Infrastructure Specialist or Director.

  • Assists with the installation, inspection, maintenance, and support of electronic security systems and related infrastructure, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, card readers, door hardware, and other security technologies.

  • Performs routine inspections of telecommunications rooms, network cabinets, cabling, and infrastructure equipment to identify organization, functionality, or maintenance concerns.

  • Assists with technology infrastructure upgrades, equipment deployments, network expansions, and technology-related construction, renovation, and facility improvement projects.

  • Responds to routine infrastructure-related service requests and assists with basic troubleshooting of connectivity, cabling, telecommunications, and technology equipment issues.

  • Identifies and reports infrastructure problems that require advanced troubleshooting or specialized technical support to the Technology Infrastructure Specialist or Director.

  • Maintains accurate records of completed work, equipment installations, service requests, cable labeling, and other infrastructure-related activities.

  • Assists with maintaining accurate documentation of technology infrastructure, equipment locations, and cable layouts.

  • Provides courteous and responsive customer service to faculty, staff, students, vendors, and other College personnel regarding routine infrastructure-related requests.

  • Follows established safety procedures, building codes, manufacturer specifications, and College technology policies and procedures.

  • Maintains work areas, telecommunications rooms, equipment areas, tools, and materials in an organized and safe condition.

  • Assists with organizing and maintaining technology infrastructure tools, supplies, equipment, and materials.

  • Participates in training and develops knowledge of technology infrastructure systems, equipment, procedures, and industry practices.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Performs network configuration on end user equipment according to established practices and standards.

  • Reads technical manuals, confer with users, troubleshoot, or conduct computer diagnostics to investigate and resolve problems or to provide technical assistance and support.

  • Refers major hardware or software problems or defective products to vendors or technicians for service.

  • Sets up, install and repair hardware, software, or peripheral end user equipment, following design or installation specifications ensuring proper installation of cables, operating systems, and appropriate software.

  • Typically configures end user equipment to attach to central authentication systems like \"active directory\". Typically identifies, refers, and reports problems with systems software or network for resolution by central IT.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Work Environment and Physical Demand


  • Work is performed in offices, classrooms, technology rooms, construction areas, and outdoor environments.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, working in confined spaces, and climbing ladders.

  • May be exposed to dust, electrical components, and construction-related conditions and must adhere to established safety procedures and use required protective equipment.

  • Lifting, carrying, and moving technology equipment, tools, and materials.

  • Use of computer and video display terminal for extended periods

  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills

  • Ability to communicate information orally and in writing

  • Ability to receive and interpret written and verbal instructions

  • May require flexible scheduling to support technology infrastructure needs, emergencies, or system deployments

  • Ability to determine computer problems and to coordinate hardware and/or software solutions.

  • Ability to communicate technical guidance and instruction to users on the use of PC and/or mainframe applications and systems.

  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance on computer hardware and software.

  • Ability to write technical instructions in the use of programs and/or program modifications.
