Job summary

Texas Disposal Systems is seeking a Technician II to assist with preventive maintenance on fleet assets, diagnose basic issues, and support repairs to keep equipment running smoothly. The role involves following schedules, learning hydraulic and electronic diagnostics, and ensuring safety protocols are followed.

Successful candidates will have at least one year of maintenance experience or a technical degree, own tools, and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • At least one year of verifiable preventive maintenance experience or technical degree with demonstrated knowledge of maintenance on class 8 vehicles or DOT Inspector License.
  • Must possess own tools.
  • Familiarity with shop equipment and safety practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Basic automotive knowledge.
  • Basic understanding of oil sampling theory and practices.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for maintaining and repairing equipment.
  • Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines.
  • Ability to learn basic computer skills to communicate document daily work and progress.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and remain alert to ensure safety.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and to communicate with co-workers.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance according to the set schedules within standard repair times.
  • Identify faults and out of service criteria when conducting vehicle inspections and make repairs promptly.
  • Notify supervisor immediately of parts to be ordered.
  • Perform basic diagnostic work and be trained on gauges in hydraulic diagnosis and computer software for engine and transmission diagnosis.
  • Replace known failed auxiliary components like brakes, sensors, starters, alternators, or hydraulic cylinders timely.
  • Work subject to periodic audits.
  • Assist in training Tech 1s or audit Preventive Maintenance Inspections.
  • Assist with more complex repairs including turbos, EGR components, fuel filter housings, and air compressors.
  • Wear PPE when required and report safety violations.
  • Comply with safety policies and state/federal regulations.
  • May drive a vehicle up to 26,000 GVW.
  • Track time per company procedures.
  • Maintain service truck readiness and repair documentation.
  • Perform monthly inventories and keep a clean workspace.
  • Attend training sessions for continuing education.

Job description

The Technician II assists with maintenance tasks for company assets and assists maintenance staff with overhauling minor components and installing replacements, with electrical, hydraulic and computer diagnostics and with scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform preventive maintenance according to the set schedules within standard repair times.
  • Properly identify faults and out of service criteria when conducting a vehicle inspection and make repairs in a timely fashion
  • Notify supervisor immediately of any parts that need to be ordered
  • Perform basic diagnostic work and be trained on the use of gauges in hydraulic diagnosis and computer software for engine and transmission diagnosis
  • Perform replacement of known failed auxiliary components, to include but not limited to: brakes, sensors, starters, alternators or hydraulic cylinders in a timely fashion without come- backs.
  • Work will be subject to periodic audits
  • May assist in training Tech 1’s or audit Preventive Maintenance Inspections
  • Assist with more complex repairs to include but not limited to Turbos and EGR Components, Fuel Filter Housings, Oil Thermostats/ Housings, Air Compressors or Differentials
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when and where required.
  • Report immediately any safety violations and correcting unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Comply with company safety policies and with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • May be required to drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) not to exceed 26,000 pounds.
  • Track time in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain service truck readiness including safety equipment, tools, equipment, and cleanliness.
  • Maintain repair order documentation to include repair description, parts and fluids used, and repair times.
  • Perform monthly inventories as required.
  • Maintain a clean workspace.
  • Attend training sessions for continuing education.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least one year of verifiable preventative maintenance experience or technical degree with demonstrated knowledge of maintenance on class 8 vehicles or DOT Inspector License (per 49 CFR – Part 396.19)
  • Must possess own tools
  • Familiarity with shop equipment and safety practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Basic automotive knowledge
  • Basic understanding of oil sampling theory and practices
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Demonstrated aptitude for maintaining and repairing equipment

PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Safe driving for the last five years
  • Formal training in preventive maintenance operations
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified or the ability to obtain certification
REQUIRED LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid Class C driver’s license
  • Safe driving record for the past three years
  • Current State Inspector License or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
