Job summary

Avum, Inc. seeks a Technical Writer to create and manage software and systems documentation for technical and nontechnical audiences.

You will work with engineers and SMEs to translate complex information into organized, precise drafts with minimal guidance. You will collaborate across teams to document architectural decisions, data flows, and coding standards, ensuring templates and best practices are consistently applied throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
• Technical background in engineering, computer science, information technology, or another highly technical field.
• Exceptional writing skills with ability to organize complex information clearly and concisely.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, operations staff, and management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and deliver quality documentation on time.

Responsibilities

• Partner with engineers to develop a comprehensive Technical Data Package documenting software architecture, interfaces, and data flows.
• Document coding standards, including architecture, naming conventions, data types, UI layout, commenting, versioning, testing, and security.
• Capture and document architectural tradeoffs and technical design decisions from meetings.
• Interview technical SMEs to gather information and draft documents needing minimal revision.
• Develop, maintain, and apply documentation templates and best practices for consistency.
• Translate requirements into Jira tickets, Confluence pages, and architectural guides.
• Update documentation throughout the project lifecycle to deliver polished materials at milestones.

Job description

Avum is seeking a Technical Writer to create and manage software and systems documentation that is clear, accurate, and accessible to both technical and nontechnical audiences. In this role, you will work closely with engineers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to translate complex technical information into organized, thorough documentation. The ideal candidate has the technical background to follow architectural discussions, capture key details and decisions, and develop accurate drafts with minimal guidance.

Key Responsibilities

• Partner with engineers to develop a comprehensive Technical Data Package documenting software architecture, interfaces, data flows, subsystem dependencies, and environment setup instructions for current and future engineering teams.
• Collaborate with engineers and reference industry style guides to document coding standards, including code architecture, naming conventions, data types, user interface layout, commenting, versioning, testing, and security.
• Capture and document architectural tradeoffs and technical design decisions discussed during meetings, including the reasoning behind those decisions.
• Conduct focused interviews with technical SMEs to gather essential information and develop accurate drafts that require minimal technical revision.
• Develop, maintain, and apply documentation templates, frameworks, and best practices to ensure consistency and usability across teams.
• Translate complex requirements into formal project documentation, actionable Jira tickets, comprehensive Confluence pages, and architectural guides.
• Update and refine documentation throughout the project lifecycle to deliver polished, complete materials at key milestones.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $115,000 annually, with a target midpoint of $95,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, certifications, and geographic location. Avum offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical (Cigna), dental and vision (Principal), 401(k), PTO, education reimbursement, and certification reimbursement.

• Certifications related to software development or proficiency in a programming language.
• A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or another technical field; or a bachelor’s degree in English or communications supported by demonstrated technical experience.
