Job description

Seeking experienced Technical Training Instructors who thrive in a fast-paced environment to provide support for a rail project in Hayward, CA / Oakland, CA.
Requirements

The Contractor will deliver a large program of classroom and hands-on training to the workforce of a major metropolitan rail operator, on behalf of our client.

Successful candidates do not need prior knowledge of the specific rail control systems being taught. Our client's engineers deliver a train-the-trainer session(s) that equips each instructor with the system knowledge and the approved course materials. After completing train-the-trainer, the instructor delivers the courses to the client’s staff using those materials.

Because the technical content is provided, we are matching on instructional capability and a technical background strong enough to absorb the train-the-trainer quickly — not on knowledge of the end system itself.

What the Role Involves
  • Completing a train-the-trainer program delivered by the client engineers, including self-study of the provided course materials and field familiarisation.
  • Delivering instructor-led courses — a mix of classroom lessons and hands-on, practical instruction — to groups of client maintenance, engineering, and operations staff.
  • Running practical, equipment-based sessions where at least half of the instruction is hands-on, and keeping learners safe around that equipment.
  • Administering and grading the examinations and quizzes supplied with each course, and identifying learners who need additional support.
  • Completing class rosters, attendance, and course paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Working to a pre-planned schedule that spans day, swing, and night shifts and occasional weekends, across multiple client sites.
Work Hours

Up to 8 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week. Delivery runs across all shifts (day, swing, and night). Some weekend work is required. All shifts and weekend dates are planned in advance.

Location

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) premises across the network — principally Hayward and Oakland, California, with flexibility to work at any location on the BART network.

Certification and Site Access

The role requires access to an operating railway. Selected candidates must obtain and maintain the client’s safety certification, including Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) training, and pass the required security and background screening before delivering training. This certification is arranged as part of onboarding; candidates do not need it in advance, but must be eligible to obtain it and willing to comply with all client operating rules and site safety requirements.

Qualifications
  • Adult technical instruction: A minimum of two (2) years delivering technical training to adults, with demonstrable experience running structured technical courses.
  • Technical background: A solid grounding in electrical, electronic, mechanical, or control/signalling systems (for example from rail, transit, industrial automation, defense, utilities, or a comparable field) — sufficient to absorb new system content through train-the-trainer and teach fault isolation and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on teaching: Confidence leading practical, equipment-based instruction, not lecture alone.
  • Learner assessment: The ability to judge whether learners understand and can apply what has been taught, against defined course objectives.
  • Communication: Fluent English, with the ability to convey in-depth technical information clearly to a mixed-ability audience.
  • Flexibility: Willingness and availability to work all shifts and some pre-planned weekends, and to travel to sites across the client’s network.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the client’s safety certification, including Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) training, and pass the required security and background screening before delivering training.
Education

College or university degree in a related field or engineering preferred.

Preferred
  • Experience in a rail or public transit environment.
  • Familiarity with communications-based train control (CBTC), signalling, SCADA, power distribution, or vehicle systems.
  • A recognized train-the-trainer, technical teaching, or vocational assessor qualification.
  • Experience training to a certification or competency standard.
Miscellaneous
  • Must be willing to apply for the SSI Clearance required to work on the project. A valid Driver’s License or Passport is required. Failure to obtain this clearance will disqualify the Contractor from this position.
  • Travel is required to the office in Oakland, CA, and other BART facilities in the Bay Area.
  • In accordance with the DOT’s FRA and FTA programs, the client’s substance screening program tests pre-employment candidates and current employees, as required for safety-sensitive positions.

Actual compensation will be determined based on the candidate's experience level, qualifications, and relevant skills.
