Job summary

Fairwater in Dania Beach, FL seeks a Technical Superintendent to lead vessel engineering and technical operations. You will supervise ship staff and contractors, ensure safe, compliant performance, and drive improvements across maintenance and repair programs.

The ideal candidate holds a maritime academy education, a USCG Unlimited Third Engineer's license or greater, shipboard and shoreside experience, and proven project management skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in marine engineering or Naval Architecture.
  • Licensed Engineering Officer with USCG credentials.
  • Experience supervising shipyard repairs and dry-docks.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe, compliant vessel operation and asset protection.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support to assigned vessels.
  • Manage repair and maintenance budgets in coordination with Marine Superintendents.
  • Oversee regulatory surveys and dry-dock events.
  • Coach Chief Engineers and participate in hiring recommendations.
  • Maintain technical files and vessel condition reports.

Position Title: Technical Superintendent
Reports To: Technical Director
Schedule: Monday through Friday business hours and additional as required
Location: Dania Beach, FL.
Position Supervised: Ship staff and contractors as required
Required Qualifications
Education

Bachelor's degree in marine engineering and/or Naval Architecture or equivalent experience.

Experience

Combined experience sailing as a Licensed Engineering Officer and working in a shoreside technical role. Shipyard experience will be accepted in lieu of shipboard experience. Past dry-dock or major repair supervisory experience

Analytical, problem-solving, time management, project management, and decision-making skills. Knowledge of technical operations for the vessel types managed. Knowledge of propulsion plant onboard vessels managed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensure vessels are operated in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner, ensuring compliance with Class and Statutory and Company regulations while protecting asset value.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support and guidance to assigned vessels. Monitor vessel performance and ensure follow-up action.
  • Manage vessel Repair and maintenance budgets and operating expenditures in coordination with the relevant Marine Superintendents and Operations teams
  • Responsible for the overall management of repair and maintenance for assigned vessels, including routine voyage repairs, regulatory surveys, dry docking shipyard events, emergencies, casualties, and modifications.
  • Promotes a professional relationship with the officers and crew. Set clear goals and expectations and coach and develop Chief Engineers in line with Competence and Performance Management objectives. Participate in interviews and make recommendations regarding new hires and promotions.
  • Act as the primary contact for technical coordination for assigned vessels
  • Carry out regular vessel visits to confirm condition and compliance with Fairwater Operating Standards and provide Vessel Condition reports.
  • Monitor and ensure maintenance software (NS) is utilized properly, verifying repairs and maintenance are properly reported, and standard jobs are followed.
  • Remain abreast of and ensure compliance with applicable flag state and class standards, international regulations, and audit results.
  • Focal point for port states, Class, terminals, USCG, etc. Assist and participate in Incident investigations.
  • Manage technical files, including service reports, machinery history, and regulatory-required documentation
