Job summary

Microchip Technology Inc. seeks a seasoned Technical Staff Engineer focused on FPGA Fabric design to join our embedded products team in the United States. You will design, optimize, and verify FPGA Fabric architecture while collaborating with architecture, ASIC, firmware, verification, and test teams to deliver high-performance devices.

The role requires extensive experience in custom FPGA design, memory circuits, SPICE simulations, and Verilog modeling. Travel up to 25% may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • 12+ years of experience in custom FPGA Fabric design and/or memory circuit design.
  • Proficient in SPICE simulations and full custom design methodologies.
  • Strong Verilog modeling and digital design experience.
  • Experience with EDA toolchains for parasitic extraction, simulations, and EM/IR analysis.
  • Ability to script and automate tests, manage queues, and analyze data.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop FPGA Fabric architecture (interconnects, routing, logic, memory blocks, clocks).
  • Analyze and optimize FPGA Fabric for performance, power, area.
  • Collaborate with system architects for integration with processors and peripherals.
  • Maintain awareness of industry standards and best practices for FPGA Fabric design.
  • Create and verify circuit schematics and Verilog models.
  • Prepare design docs, test plans, and participate in reviews.
  • Work with hardware, software, and system teams to align designs with requirements.
  • Stay updated on FPGA advancements and contribute to innovation efforts.
  • Engage in verification of other circuit blocks beyond FPGA Fabric.
  • Support timing characterization and silicon validation.

Job Description:

Microchip Technology Inc. is a leading provider of embedded control applications. Our product portfolio comprises general purpose and specialized 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit microcontrollers, 32-bit microprocessors, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) products, a broad spectrum of high-performance linear, mixed-signal, power management, thermal management, radio frequency (RF), timing, safety, security, wired connectivity and wireless connectivity devices, as well as serial Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM), Serial Flash memories, Parallel Flash memories, and serial Static Random Access Memory (SRAM). We also license Flash-IP solutions that are incorporated in a broad range of products.

Microchip Technology Inc. has a Technical Staff Engineer - FPGA Fabric Design opening based in San Jose, California. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of the FPGA Fabric in advanced and low power FPGA devices. In this role, you will be working within a team of other circuit design engineers and collaborating with architecture, ASIC, firmware, verification, and test teams to help deliver industry-leading FPGA products.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop FPGA Fabric architecture, including interconnect, routing muxes, logic elements, memory blocks, clocking, and other key components
  • Analyze and optimize FPGA Fabric architecture for performance, power consumption, area utilization, and other relevant metrics
  • Collaborate with system architects to ensure seamless integration of FPGA Fabric with other system components, such as processors, interfaces, and peripherals
  • Remain informed on industry standards and best practices related to FPGA Fabric and incorporate them into design processes
  • Creation and verification of circuit schematics and functional Verilog models
  • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including specifications, design documents, test plans, and participate in formal reviews of other block specifications
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware designers, software engineers, and system architects, to align the FPGA Fabric design with overall product requirements
  • Stay current on latest advancements in FPGA technologies and contribute to ongoing research and innovation efforts within the company
  • Engage in design and verification of other circuit blocks outside of FPGA Fabric
  • Support verification and timing characterization teams
  • Drive and participate in silicon validation of FPGA Fabric blocks for functionality and performance
Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science
  • 12+ years of experience in custom FPGA Fabric design and/or memory circuit design
  • High degree of SPICE simulation proficiency
  • Adept at leveraging full custom and mixed signal design EDA tool set for parasitic extraction, simulations, and EM/IR analysis
  • Demonstrated competency in scripting, managing simulation queues, data capture and analysis
  • Proficient in simulating and analyzing yield impact, reliability, and power
  • Ability to support layout, verification, timing characterization, and software model developers
  • Ability to develop and test Verilog simulation model and compare back to SPICE based model
  • Excellent analytical, communication (written and verbal), and documentation skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive team player
  • Attention to detail and ability to drive tasks to completion independently in timely manner
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Experience in analog and full custom design
  • Experience in FPGA or ASIC development
  • Experience in functional verification and timing characterization
  • Experience in low power design including dual rail, array biasing, dynamic low power mode switching (sleep, power gating, column array muxing)
  • Experience in OCV timing and yield variation analyses using Solido and Monte Carlo
