Job Description

Microchip Technology Inc. is a leading provider of embedded control applications. The Technical Staff Engineer – Applications position in San Jose, CA will provide advanced‑level consulting and technical support to tier 1 customers on FPGA/SoC design and debug. Responsibilities include engaging with customers and field teams, providing product demonstrations and reference designs, leading cross‑functional teams, training field support engineers, and creating technical collateral.

Responsibilities
  • Engage with tier‑1 customers and field teams to support pre and post‑sales activities for FPGA/SoC design.
  • Provide advanced consulting and technical support (remote and onsite) through product demonstrations, design examples, reference designs, and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate expertise throughout all FPGA/SoC design phases, including requirements analysis, HDL development and simulation, processor system design, synthesis optimization, place‑route and timing constraints, board‑level schematic reviews, and hardware debugging.
  • Lead or participate in cross‑functional teams across the BU, presenting proposals and obtaining buy‑ins to improve solutions or develop future products.
  • Participate in functional block reviews, product characterization, rollout, and tool usability discussions with senior engineering and marketing experts.
  • Train field and technical support engineers on new Microchip FPGA/SoC products and tools.
  • Drive early adoption and evaluation of advanced debugging, software flows, IP cores, and kits.
  • Create customer‑facing collateral, application notes, reference designs, and white papers on advanced interfaces and solutions for Microchip FPGA/SoC products.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering/Science; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 12+ years of industry experience with FPGA‑based architecture definition, design, and support, including embedded processor and high‑speed serial IO.
  • 5+ years of experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal analyzers.
  • Advanced domain expertise in one or more FPGA/SoC design/debug areas (e.g., DDR memory interfaces, transceiver protocols, timing closure, synthesis, embedded processors).
  • In‑depth experience with FPGA devices and ecosystems from at least one major supplier (Microchip, Xilinx, or Altera).
  • Embedded processor experience with C, Linux development, and software debugging tools such as Keil, IAR, or Eclipse.
  • Experience with Libero, Vivado, or Quartus Design Software and other EDA tools for FPGA design.
  • Board level experience, including power supply decoupling, high‑speed signal termination, and routing.
  • System‑level debugging ability to investigate root causes for clients.
  • Expertise in VHDL/Verilog, C.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills, and ability to drive issues to closure independently.
  • Hard‑working, committed, and able to handle stress and multitask in a dynamic customer‑centric environment.
  • Self‑starter and excellent team‑worker.

Pay Range

Annual base salary range for this position is $91,000 – $232,000.*
