Job summary

Grady Health System is seeking a Technical Specialist to lead the technologist team in the hospital's clinical laboratory. The role partners with the Section Manager to optimize workflows, staff development, quality initiatives, and administrative duties.

Required: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field, ASCP or NCA certification, and 1+ year hospital lab experience (or 5+ years without a bachelor's).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field required.
• With Bachelor's Degree: at least one year of hospital clinical lab experience.
• Without Bachelor's Degree: five or more years of experience in the specialty area.
• Certification as MLS by ASCP or NCA required.

• Monitors technical functions, quality control, and QA review.
• Prepares policies and procedures for subspecialty areas.
• Participates in hiring and staff development decisions.
• Schedules in-services and continuing education for staff.

This role partners closely with the Section Manager to support workflow efficiency, staff development, education, quality initiatives, and administrative responsibilities. The position requires a high level of autonomy and independent judgment in decision-making.Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field requiredWith Bachelor's Degree: At minimum one year of experience in a hospital clinical laboratory is required.Without Bachelor's Degree: Five or more years of experience in the specialty area is required.Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists -ASCP, National Certification Agency NCA required.Key ResponsibilitiesMonitors technical functions in area of responsibility, including quality control and quality assurance review.Prepares policies and procedure manual for subspecialty and/or provides information and input into section policies procedures manual.Participates in hiring new employees by reviewing resumes, participating in interviews and providing input to hiring decisions.Schedules departmental in-services and continuing education opportunities for staff.Prioritizes, reviews, and monitors workload of routine operations and fills in at bench (workstation) as needed.Instructs testing personnel in established procedures, techniques, and new modified procedures, and provides input for staff evaluations.Troubleshoots instruments, resolves technical problems, and initiates remedial actions.Monitors performance of proficiency and competency testing.Serves as primary assistant to the department manager and functions as the department manager in his or her absence. Acts as After-Hours Supervisor as needed.Assists department manager in developing, implementing, and monitoring department goals and continuous quality improvement. Monitors, evaluates and documents employee performance and compliance with standard operating procedures and work rules.
