Job summary

Grady Health System in Atlanta, GA seeks a Technical Specialist to lead the technologist operations within the sub-specialty area. This role collaborates with the Section Manager to support workflow efficiency, staff development, education, quality initiatives, and administrative responsibilities.

The position demands a high level of autonomy and independent judgment in decision-making, with the ability to oversee technical functions and ensure quality control and compliance with SOPs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field is required.
• With Bachelor's Degree: at minimum one year of experience in a hospital clinical laboratory is required.
• Without Bachelor's Degree: Five or more years of experience in the specialty area is required.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the ASCP or NCA is required.

Responsibilities

• Monitors technical functions in area of responsibility, including quality control and quality assurance review.
• Prepares policies and procedure manual for subspecialty and/or provides input into section policies procedures manual.
• Participates in hiring new employees by reviewing resumes, participating in interviews and providing input to hiring decisions.
• Schedules departmental in-services and continuing education opportunities for staff.
• Prioritizes, reviews, and monitors workload of routine operations and fills in at bench as needed.
• Instructs testing personnel in established procedures, techniques, and new modified procedures, and provides input for staff evaluations.
• Troubleshoots instruments, resolves technical problems, and initiates remedial actions.
• Monitors performance of proficiency and competency testing.
• Serves as primary assistant to the department manager and acts as After-Hours Supervisor as needed.
• Assists department manager in developing, implementing, and monitoring department goals and continuous quality improvement.
• Additional duties as assigned.

• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists -ASCP, National Certification Agency NCA required.

• Instructs testing personnel in established procedures, techniques, and new modified procedures, and provides input for staff evaluations.
• Troubleshoots instruments, resolves technical problems, and initiates remedial actions.
• Monitors performance of proficiency and competency testing.
• Serves as primary assistant to the department manager and functions as the department manager in his or her absence. Acts as After-Hours Supervisor as needed.
• Assists department manager in developing, implementing, and monitoring department goals and continuous quality improvement. Monitors, evaluates and documents employee performance and compliance with standard operating procedures and work rules. Communicates problems / resolution to After Hours Supervisors, Lab Managers and Administrator.
• Additional duties as assigned.
