Job summary

Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation in Atlanta seeks a Technical Specialist to lead the technologist team and oversee subspecialty technical operations. This role partners with the Section Manager to support workflow efficiency, staff development, education, quality initiatives, and admin responsibilities.

The position requires a high level of autonomy and judgment; eligibility includes a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field, ASCP/NCA MLS certification, and 1+ year hospital

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field is required.
• With Bachelor's Degree: at minimum one year of experience in a hospital clinical laboratory is required.
• Without Bachelor's Degree: five or more years of experience in the specialty area is required.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the ASCP or NCA is required.

Responsibilities

• Monitors technical functions in area of responsibility, including quality control and quality assurance review.
• Prepares policies and procedures for subspecialty and contributes to the section policies and procedures manual.
• Participates in hiring by reviewing resumes and providing input to hiring decisions.
• Schedules departmental in-services and continuing education opportunities for staff.
• Prioritizes and monitors workload and may bench work as needed.
• Instructs testing personnel in procedures and new methods, and participates in staff evaluations.
• Troubleshoots instruments and initiates remedial actions.
• Monitors proficiency and competency testing; supports department goals and CQI.

Education

Job Summary

The Technical Specialist serves as the lead technologist and oversees the technical operations of the sub-specialty area. This role partners closely with the Section Manager to support workflow efficiency, staff development, education, quality initiatives, and administrative responsibilities. The position requires a high level of autonomy and independent judgment in decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field required

With Bachelor's Degree: At minimum one year of experience in a hospital clinical laboratory is required.

Without Bachelor's Degree: Five or more years of experience in the specialty area is required.

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists -ASCP, National Certification Agency NCA required.

Key Responsibilities

Monitors technical functions in area of responsibility, including quality control and quality assurance review.

Prepares policies and procedure manual for subspecialty and/or provides information and input into section policies procedures manual.

Participates in hiring new employees by reviewing resumes, participating in interviews and providing input to hiring decisions.

Schedules departmental in-services and continuing education opportunities for staff.

Prioritizes, reviews, and monitors workload of routine operations and fills in at bench (workstation) as needed.

Instructs testing personnel in established procedures, techniques, and new modified procedures, and provides input for staff evaluations.

Troubleshoots instruments, resolves technical problems, and initiates remedial actions.

Monitors performance of proficiency and competency testing.

Serves as primary assistant to the department manager and functions as the department manager in his or her absence.

Acts as After-Hours Supervisor as needed.

Assists department manager in developing, implementing, and monitoring department goals and continuous quality improvement.

Monitors, evaluates and documents employee performance and compliance with standard operating procedures and work rules.

Communicates problems / resolution to After Hours Supervisors, Lab Managers and Administrator.

Additional duties as assigned.
