Job summary

Sonoco is seeking a Technical Services Specialist/Representative to provide technical support for customer processes, troubleshoot issues, and lead can/end investigations directly at customer locations. You will be trained in 2-piece and 3-piece steel can and steel end manufacturing to deliver high-level manufacturing knowledge.

You will travel 50–75% to customer sites, serve as a packaging SME, and respond to technical/regulatory requests for certifications of cans and ends.

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years’ work experience in operations, quality, R&D, or laboratory in food, beverage, personal care products, or household products manufacturing or related packaging industries.
  • BS in a physical science or engineering field (Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Packaging, or mechanical/chemical/metallurgical/materials science engineering) or equivalent experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Office; data and statistical analysis capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site technical support and customer process troubleshooting.
  • Serve as packaging SME for the assigned territory and respond to technical/regulatory requests for certifications of cans and ends.
  • Lead or assist in customer complaint investigations with sampling and traceability.
  • Provide training to customers on food cans and ends and double seam evaluation; prepare specification documents and communications.
  • Support plant operations and technical projects to drive successful outcomes and continuous improvement.

Reporting directly to the Manager of Technical Services, the Technical Services Specialist/Representative will be providing technical support for customer processes, troubleshooting, and can/end failure investigations directly at customer locations. This position will be trained in 2-piece and 3-piece steel can and steel end manufacturing to provide a high level of manufacturing knowledge to the customer.

What you'll be doing
  • Follows all company and customer safety protocols and maintains a safe working environment.
  • Travels to customer locations on a regular basis to provide on-site customer support.
  • Serves as a packaging Subject Matter Expert (SME) for customers in the assigned territory.
  • Responds to Technical/Regulatory requests to provide various certifications of cans and ends.
  • Starts customer complaint investigations by gathering samples, all relevant traceability information, and other information as required.
  • Works with customers to quarantine suspect product while minimizing disruptions to their operation.
  • Leads or assists in any sorting or containment activities that are needed at customer locations.
  • Provides training to customers on food cans and ends and double seam evaluation.
  • Prepares specification documents and other customer communications as required.
  • Statistical analysis of manufacturing data.
  • Provides clear and concise communication of technical details in manner that customers will understand.
  • Supports plant operations and technical projects as required, contributing to successful project delivery and operational performance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 5 or more years’ work experience in operations, quality, R&D, or laboratory in any of the following industries: Food, beverage, personal care products, or household products manufacturing Food, beverage, or consumer products packaging manufacturing
  • Candidates with experience in other industries should possess a BS in a physical science or engineering field. Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Packaging, or mechanical/chemical/metallurgical/materials science engineering degrees or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop relationships internally with manufacturing locations and externally at customer locations
  • Strong communication skills Microsoft Office suite applications
  • Data analysis and statistical analysis capabilities

Working Conditions

50-75% travel to customer or internal manufacturing locations

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this role is from $104,800 to $117,900 plus annual target bonus of 7.5% of base salary. An annual incentive is awarded to eligible employees upon attaining various business and individual goals as defined by the Company and the department leader. This annual incentive is discretionary, and the Company has sole discretion to determine the amount of the award.
