Job summary

West Virginia University is seeking a Technical/Grant Writer for the WV Grant Resources Center. This full-time remote role focuses on grant identification, writing, and submission for local governments, nonprofits, and businesses across West Virginia.

You will manage multiple proposals, develop templates and budgets, facilitate meetings, and liaise with foundations and agencies. Strong writing, research, and deadline-driven work are essential; some travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • At least 1 year of experience in grant writing, proposal development, submission, and project management.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance to eligible applicants and identify funding opportunities.
  • Develop proposal materials: narratives, letters of support, summaries, and templates.
  • Facilitate meetings, trainings, and workshops on grant writing.
  • Manage preparation of grant proposal packages and support submission.
  • Liaise with foundations, government agencies, and other funders.
  • Interpret funding opportunities, write narratives and develop budgets.
  • Assist applicants in completing grant applications and uploading documents.
  • Maintain meeting records and project files for reporting and management.

Job description

The WV Grant Resources Center at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Technical/Grant Writer.

About the Opportunity

This is a full-time remote position. The West Virginia Grant Resource Centers (WV Grant Centers) assist local government, nonprofits, businesses, and other eligible applicants with grant identification, writing, and submission; project development; and pitch decks to boost economic development across West Virginia and build stronger community capacity. The focus is on the pre-award process, helping eligible entities with economic and community development projects by putting together competitive proposals and supporting the submission of complete application packages. The WV Grant Centers are looking for a Technical/Grant Writer with a proven ability to work on several projects at once on tight deadlines; facilitate meetings; understand technical writing, deadlines, and grant funding criteria; use creative problem-solving; and design and develop projects. Strong written and oral communication and research skills, along with a professional, team-oriented mentality, are a must.

Some travel is required. This is a grant-funded position. To be most successful in this role you will have a passion for the State of WV and mission to serve at WVU.

What You'll Do
  • Provide technical assistance to eligible applicants and support with the identification of funding opportunities
  • Develop materials to aid in the proposal development process, including templates for project narratives and letters of support/commitment; summaries of grant guidelines (e.g., notices of funding opportunities, requests for proposals, funding opportunity announcements); letters of intent; and other application materials
  • Facilitate meetings, training, and workshops on the grant writing process regularly
  • Manage the preparation of grant proposal packages and support eligible entities throughout the proposal submission process
  • Liaise and interact with foundations, government agencies, and other grantmakers
  • Interpret funding opportunities, write project narratives, and develop budgets
  • Guide and assist eligible applicants in filling out grant application forms for funding by public and private funders, and uploading documents into submission portals
  • Maintain meeting records, project files, and other documentation needed for project management and reporting
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, English, Journalism or similar field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the following:
    • Strong written and oral communications and research skills.
    • Experience with the grant process, proposal development and submission, and project management.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be a highly motivated, energetic individual equally capable of working independently or in a team setting
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong written and oral communication and research skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and facilitate meetings
  • Ability to quickly acquire knowledge of policies and procedures and applicable regulations mandated by different grantmakers
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite
  • Experience with grant portals (e.g., Grants.gov)
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize a variety of tasks and complete them in a timely manner
  • Database management skills
  • Knowledge of current community and economic development trends
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
