Job description

Technical Editor

Location: New England, North Dakota

Salary Range: $90,000 – $98,000 per year

Position Overview

Our client, a professional services organization supporting government and defense programs, is seeking a Technical Editor for an onsite, permanent position in New England, North Dakota. The role owns the clarity, accuracy, and consistency of technical documentation produced for government customers.

This is a good fit for an editor who takes genuine satisfaction in turning dense technical material into documents that are precise and readable. The work carries real consequence: the deliverables you edit are read by government reviewers, and quality of presentation affects how the underlying technical work is received.

Key Responsibilities
  • You will edit technical documents, reports, manuals, and deliverables for grammar, syntax, clarity, and consistency, working across material written by engineers, analysts, and subject matter experts whose strengths lie in the technical content rather than the prose.
  • You will enforce compliance with applicable style guides, government formatting standards, and contract-specific documentation requirements, maintaining consistency of terminology, acronym usage, numbering, and citation across large document sets and multiple contributing authors.
  • You will perform substantive editing as well as copyediting, restructuring sections for logical flow, flagging gaps or unsupported statements, tightening verbose passages, and querying authors where meaning is ambiguous rather than guessing at intent.
  • You will manage document production workflows including version control, review cycles, incorporation of reviewer comments, and final quality checks before delivery. You will also maintain document templates and style resources, and coordinate with graphics and production staff on figures, tables, and layout so that deliverables meet deadline without last-minute compromise.
  • You will maintain the editorial standards library for the program, keeping style guidance, approved terminology, and template documentation current as requirements evolve, and you will provide practical writing guidance to technical staff so that recurring issues are corrected at the source rather than repeatedly at the editing stage.
Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, technical writing, or a related field is required, or equivalent demonstrated professional editing experience.
  • You must have prior technical editing experience, with a portfolio or track record of editing complex technical material for an external or government audience. Exceptional command of English grammar, usage, and punctuation is essential.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, including styles, templates, track changes, and cross-referencing, is required, along with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple documents against competing deadlines. The role is onsite in New England, North Dakota.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting government or defense contracts is strongly preferred, along with familiarity with government documentation standards and deliverable review processes.
  • Eligibility to obtain a security clearance is advantageous, as is experience with Adobe Acrobat and FrameMaker, SharePoint-based document management, proposal or contract deliverable support, and knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for documents.
  • Experience editing proposals under compressed deadlines is valued, as is familiarity with configuration-managed documentation and formal deliverable acceptance processes. Candidates who can work comfortably with highly technical authors across engineering and analytical disciplines, and who bring patience to iterative review cycles, tend to succeed in this role.
Compensation and Benefits
  • This is a permanent, full-time position with a salary range of $90,000 to $98,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
  • You will join an established organization delivering work of clear consequence, in a role where your craft is visible in every deliverable that leaves the office. The position offers stability, a defined scope of ownership over documentation quality, and the opportunity to build specialized experience in government contract support that transfers across the sector.

We are an equal opportunity employer.
