Job summary

American Water Works Association in Denver, CO, is seeking a Technical Editor to join our Publishing department. You will edit technical material for manuals, standards, data products, and reports, ensuring adherence to AWWA guidelines and industry standards.

You’ll coordinate with authors, editors, and designers, maintain publication schedules, and stay current on publishing technologies and copyright/trademark issues. A bachelor's degree and 3+ years editing experience are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, journalism, English or related area required.
  • Training, coursework, or experience in engineering or the sciences including biology or chemistry required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years publishing/editing experience required; experience on peer-reviewed journals or standards/consensus documents preferred.
  • Demonstrated proofreading and project management experience required.
  • Experience with e-publishing and all-digital workflows preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry editorial standards (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style) required.
  • Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe products and online publishing tools preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Edit, rewrite or write, and proofread publications for readability and conformance with style guides.
  • Adhere to production schedules and deadlines for all projects.
  • Serve as publishing liaison with internal groups and attend kickoff/production meetings.
  • Communicate with authors, incorporate author corrections, and manage copy changes.
  • Collaborate with production editors and graphic designers on projects.
  • Stay current on trends in publishing and water sector knowledge, including copyright/trademark issues.
  • Prepare and submit CIP requests to Library of Congress.
  • Assist Sr. Editorial Manager and other editors as needed.

POSITION OBJECTIVE/GENERAL PURPOSE

Edit technical material for publication, including manuals, handbooks, standards, data products, and reports. Ensure publications adhere to AWWA guidelines, including editorial quality and schedules.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Edit, rewrite or write, and proofread publications for maximum readability, clarity, syntax, grammar, and conformance with AWWA style, the Chicago Manual of Style, and other publishing industry accepted standards and policies for technical publications
  • Adhere to production schedules and deadlines for all projects and assignments
  • Serve as publishing liaison with the Standards and Optimization Programs group and the Education and Engineering Services group, including attending kickoff and production meetings
  • Communicate with internal and external authors as needed, pose author queries as appropriate, and incorporate author corrections to copy
  • Collaborate with production editors and graphic designers on publications projects
  • Maintain current awareness and knowledge of trends, developments, and technologies in the publishing and drinking water professions, including digital, copyright, and trademark issues
  • Prepare and submit CIP requests to Library of Congress
  • Serve as a backup and support to the Sr. Editorial Manager, Books, and collaborate with other technical editors as needed

Requirements

Education, Certification or Formal Training:
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, journalism, English, or related area required
  • Training, coursework, or experience in engineering or the sciences including, but not limited to, biology or chemistry required
Work Experience (including computer skills):
  • Minimum of three (3) years publishing/editing experience required; technical editing experience on a peer-reviewed journal or on standards/consensus documents preferred
  • Demonstrated proofreading and project management experience required
  • Experience with e-publishing and all-digital workflows preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry editorial standards (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style) required
  • Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook required
  • Working knowledge of Adobe products and experience with online publishing tools preferred
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The targeted pay is $30.31 to $37.88 per hour depending on experience and is paired with a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Three separate paid time off accounts (Vacation, Sick and Personal)
  • Immediate eligibility and vesting for retirement savings plan with a 3% employer contribution and up to 3% company match upon hire
  • Excellent medical, dental and vision plans with generous cost sharing by employer
  • $250 payment towards the cost of at-home computer equipment
