Job summary

Theatre Aspen in Aspen, CO is seeking a full-time, year-round Technical Director/Production Manager to oversee the technical operations, budgeting, staffing, and planning for its iconic tent theatre and expanding permanent campus.

This unique role blends hands-on scenic construction with administrative leadership, teaching, and long-range planning, with a housing subsidy and extensive benefits as part of the package.

Qualifications

• Five or more years of professional Technical Direction, Production Management, or equivalent production leadership experience.
• Extensive knowledge of scenic construction, rigging, and theatrical systems.
• Proven experience managing production budgets, cost analysis, and vendor negotiations.
• Strong project management, scheduling, and organizational skills across multiple concurrent productions.
• Experience recruiting, hiring, and supervising production staff and seasonal crews.
• Ability to read technical drawings and collaborate with designers and scenic fabricators.
• Excellent communication and collaborative leadership skills, with experience navigating labor and contract discussions.
• Experience working in outdoor, temporary, or non-traditional performance venues.
• Professional regional theatre experience.
• CAD proficiency, welding experience, or ETCP certification.
• Experience working under Equity and other union agreements.

Responsibilities

• Production Leadership & Design Collaboration: review scenic designs for feasibility, budget, safety, and venue compatibility; organize production meetings; lead the scenic shop bid process; maintain production specifications.
• MainStage Production Execution: lead load-ins, tech rehearsals, changes, and strikes; supervise scenic, lighting, audio, costumes, props and stage management.
• Education Production & Scenic Construction: lead scenic builds for year-round education programming; supervise student/volunteer builds.
• Tent Theatre & Site Stewardship: manage tent theatre activities, scheduling, storage, and site maintenance.
• Safety & Emergency Preparedness: lead safety orientations and OSHA compliance; coordinate facilities and site supplies.
• Budget, Vendor & Equipment Management: develop production budgets; coordinate with vendors; manage inventories and improvements.
• Staffing, Recruitment & Mentorship: recruit and mentor seasonal staff; foster inclusive environment; participate in labor discussions.
• Community Partnerships & Future Campus Planning: build local partnerships; advise on planning of permanent theatre campus.
