Technical Consulting Director, Archaeologist (Director Level)

Join to apply for the Technical Consulting Director, Archaeologist (Director Level) role at ERM.

ERM is seeking a highly motivated Technical Consulting Director, Archaeologist to join our global consulting firm as part of our Cultural Resources Services team. This is a full-time, salary-based position that can be based from a local ERM office or fully remote. Preference is for candidates local to the east coast and familiar with relevant regional regulatory processes (federal, state, municipal). Demonstrated regional high-level consulting experience is required. The hire will be attached to an ERM office in Minneapolis, but other locations will be considered for the ideal candidate. The successful candidate will provide technical assistance across the U.S. and support project needs and business development within their region.

Responsibilities
  1. Oversee archaeological studies including literature review, field reconnaissance, surveys, and excavations.
  2. Support ERM’s business growth in archaeology and cultural heritage through technical consulting.
  3. Collaborate with other ERM practice areas to share resources and best practices.
  4. Represent ERM with state, federal, and local agencies.
  5. Maintain regular communication with clients via email and calls.
  6. Manage subcontractors and assist in proposal preparation.
  7. Manage multiple projects within scope, budget, and schedule, ensuring quality.
  8. Lead, mentor, and manage performance of the technical team.
  9. Leverage existing client relationships to expand ERM’s market share in cultural resources.
  10. Participate in multidisciplinary teams across ERM offices globally.
  11. Engage with State Historic Preservation Offices and federal agencies.
  12. Lead and supervise staff during fieldwork and office tasks.
  13. Conduct research and prepare technical reports.
Requirements
  • Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field plus 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist.
  • Ability to obtain archaeological and cultural resource permits.
  • Experience with inventory, survey, testing, and data recovery.
  • Proven author of agency-reviewed technical reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies preferred.
  • Proficiency in permitting regulations (FERC, USACE, DEQ, SCC).
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Business development skills and ability to build client relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Limited travel within the eastern U.S.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate motorized vehicles.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with energy projects and laboratory materials processing.
  • Supervisory experience and strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, energetic, self-motivated.

Salary range: $145,000 – $171,467 annually, depending on experience and other factors. ERM offers comprehensive benefits including paid time off, health insurance, 401(k), and more.
