ERM is seeking a highly motivated Technical Consulting Director, Archaeologist to join our global consulting firm as part of our Cultural Resources Services team. This is a full-time, salary-based position that can be based from a local ERM office or fully remote. Applicants are preferred to be local to the east coast, as well as be familiar with the relevant regional regulatory processes (i.e., federal, state, and municipal). Demonstrated regional high-level consulting experience is required. Successful candidates must be flexible and responsive to a challenging and changing work environment where schedules and tasks fluctuate according to the needs of the projects and clients. The hire will be attached to an ERM office in Minneapolis. Other geographies will be considered for the ideal candidate. The successful candidate will also provide technical assistance for clients throughout the United States while also focusing on project needs and business development within their region.

Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee a team performing literature review, field reconnaissance, field surveys, and excavation for archaeological studies and projects.
  2. Provide technical consulting skills to support the growth of ERM’s business and client base in archaeology and cultural heritage.
  3. Interact with other ERM practice areas to share multi-disciplinary resources and best practices across the country.
  4. Represent ERM at meetings with state, federal, and local agencies.
  5. Communicate regularly with clients via email and phone conferences.
  6. Oversee and manage subcontractors.
  7. Assist with preparing proposals to meet client needs.
  8. Manage multiple projects within scope, budget, and schedule expectations, ensuring quality standards on project deliverables.
  9. Lead, manage performance, hire, retain, inspire, and mentor personnel for the overall success of the technical team.
  10. Capitalize on existing ERM client relationships to expand ERM’s profile and market share in the Cultural Resource market through technical delivery and business development.
  11. Participate on teams of impact assessment professionals from multiple offices worldwide.
  12. Interact with State Historic Preservation Offices, federal agencies, and access online cultural resource databases.
  13. Lead and supervise staff in an office setting and/or during fieldwork.
  14. Perform research and write technical reports.
  15. Potentially conduct fieldwork.

Requirements:

  1. Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field plus 8+ years of related paid experience.
  2. Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  3. Registered Professional Archaeologist.
  4. Ability to obtain archaeological and cultural resource permits.
  5. Experience with inventory, survey, testing, and data recovery.
  6. Experience as primary author on agency-reviewed technical reports.
  7. Strong attention to detail in documentation of work.
  8. Experience interacting with regulatory agency personnel preferred.
  9. Proficient in permitting regulations for cultural resources (e.g., FERC, USACE, DEQ, SCC).
  10. Excellent communication and computer skills.
  11. Business development abilities and capacity to maintain long-term client relationships.
  12. Ability to manage and work independently or within a team.
  13. Limited travel within the eastern United States.
  14. Strong teambuilding, influencing skills, integrity, and confidence to address client and business needs.
  15. Valid driver’s license and ability to operate motorized vehicles.

Anticipated annual base pay: $145,000 – $171,467 (USD). Pay depends on education, qualifications, experience, skills, location, performance, and organizational needs. Bonus pay may be available.
