Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Part‑Time Technical Assistant III to join Interior Architecture. The Technical Assistant III serves as the key technical contact in a lively learning community that blends digital studio processes with traditional analog methods to explore the built environment. Responsibilities include setting up and operating core maker spaces, instructing faculty and students on equipment use, providing technical and conceptual guidance, maintaining and repairing equipment, implementing environmental health and safety practices, and coordinating with faculty on tool and space setup. The role supports an inclusive campus environment dedicated to social equity, environmental and climate justice, and equal access to resources.

Essential Functions

• Set up and operate core maker spaces, including shared studio tools, 3D printing and scanning equipment, VR hardware, studio printers, and ancillary learning spaces.
• Assist with moving and arranging studio furniture to support dynamic learning spaces.
• Submit work orders to facilities and coordinate repairs with vendors when necessary.
• Advise faculty and students on technical parameters of class assignments and proper handling of machinery and production processes.
• Implement environmental health and safety practices in equipment spaces in coordination with RISD offices.
• Administer web hosting accounts, set up domains, and manage digital accounts for faculty and students.
• Perform preventative maintenance, minor and major repairs, software upgrades, and equipment updates.
• Research, procure, and set up new equipment and spaces as curriculum, models, and technologies evolve, including lighting and mold‑making/casting areas.
• Maintain inventory levels of equipment and supplies.
• Hire, train, schedule, and supervise student monitors.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum four years of practical or relevant work experience in the art and design disciplines and associated technologies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills with a diverse range of individuals.
• Familiarity and interest in digital tools such as 3D printers, scanning machinery, VR hardware, laser printers, CNC milling machinery, physical computing technologies, lighting, and digital cameras.
• Experience with analog processes including casting, plaster work, ceramics firing, and other mold‑making and modelling methods and materials.
• Fluency with contemporary digital platforms and networking systems, including MacOS, Windows, Adobe Creative Cloud, Autodesk, Rhinoceros, and real‑time rendering software.
• Ability to anticipate needs, provide creative solutions, and think organizationally.
