Job summary

Indiana University Health Public Safety at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis is seeking a Full‑Time Security Officer to patrol facilities, respond to incidents, and safeguard patients, staff and visitors. Rotating 12‑hour shifts include day and overnight schedules, with every‑other‑weekend duty.

The role emphasizes enforcement of hospital policies, incident response, and leadership during on‑site emergencies, with supervision of officers, shift planning, and collaboration with external agencies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 5 years of law enforcement experience, or an Associate's degree with 3 years of law enforcement experience.
• Valid Indiana driver's license.
• Successful completion of Indiana Law Enforcement Tier I or II training and IU Health DPS field training.
• Ability to obtain NCIC/IDACS certification.
• No convictions for felony, domestic violence or violent misdemeanor offenses.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background investigation, drug screening and psychological exam.
• Working knowledge of computers and various software programs.

Responsibilities

• Conducts rounding and patrols on properties owned, leased, or occupied by IU Health.
• Responds to calls for service; enforces IU Health rules, regulations, policies, and state statutes.
• Provides direction and guidance to team members, guests, and patients; de-escalates tense situations.
• Responds to and investigates criminal activity and vehicle crashes as needed.
• Maintains records, logs, and written reports; performs security screening as required.
• Oversees shift operations and supervises police officers and Public Safety Officers.
• Assigns work, schedules and ensures proper shift coverage; coordinates with other agencies.
• Acts as senior departmental officer in absence of higher ranking officer.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the chain of command.

Primary Responsibilities

Conducts rounding and foot and vehicle patrols in and around properties that are owned, leased, or occupied by IU Health. Responds to calls for service. Enforces and assists in the enforcement of IU Health rules, regulations, policies, and state statutes. Provides direction and guidance to team members, guests, and patients. Assists teams with de‑scaling tense, uncertain and emotional situations. Proactively works to prevent crime and safety incidents. Responds to and investigates criminal activity and vehicle crashes as needed. Maintains records and logs and completes written reports as required. Performs physical security screening as required. Creates a safe healthcare environment for team members, patients, and guests. Oversees shift operations and supervises police officers and Public Safety Officers. Issues work assignments and supervises work activities of all assigned personnel. Completes and approves work schedules to ensure proper shift coverage Assists other public safety agencies as needed. Responds to officers’ calls for assistance and assumes on‑scene command of critical incidents. Control and assess situations, identify appropriate actions to preserve crime scenes, compile critical information and coordinate activities with other jurisdictions. Acts in capacity of senior departmental officer in absence of more senior ranking officer. Performs other duties as assigned by the chain of command.

Candidate Requirements

• Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent and five (5) years of law enforcement experience. OR Associate's degree and three (3) years of law enforcement experience.
• Requires current non-restricted Indiana Driver's License.
• Requires previous successful completion of Indiana Law Enforcement Tier I or II training, successful completion of the IU Health DPS field training program.
• Must be able to obtain NCIC/IDACS certification and access.
• Must not have convictions for felony, domestic violence or violent misdemeanor offenses.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment background investigation, drug screening and psychological exam.
• Requires working knowledge of computers and various software programs.
• Have never had law enforcement officer license denied by final order or revoked.
• Not currently on suspension or have a voluntary surrender of a law enforcement license currently effect.

Candidate Benchmarks

• 3 months – Initial training and familiarization with role.
• 6 months – Competency in role under the supervision of a Police Lieutenant.
• 12 months – Competency in role and ability to lead a shift solo.
