Description

Teaching Pastor
College Ave Church | San Diego, California

Employment Structure: Full-Time (Part-time arrangements may be considered)

Compensation: $100,000 annually for Full-Time

About College Ave

College Ave Church is a rapidly growing, multi-generational church in the heart of San Diego, just blocks from San Diego State University. We are a diverse church family with a simple mission: to know, love, and follow the real Jesus.

Purpose of the Role

The Teaching Pastor will contribute to the teaching and discipleship ministry of College Ave through a variety of settings, including occasional Sunday morning preaching and other opportunities to teach and equip the church, such as baptism courses and discipleship classes.

Working under the supervision of the Senior Pastor, this person will help communicate biblical truth clearly and faithfully, serving as an additional teaching voice for the church. Sunday preaching will be an important part of the role, with opportunities scheduled in collaboration with the Senior Pastor, but the position extends well beyond the Sunday platform.

We’re open to structuring this position as either full-time or part-time, depending on the candidate’s experience, availability, and the scope of responsibilities.

What You’ll Do
Teach and Communicate God’s Word
  • Preach during Sunday morning services on a recurring, as-needed basis, serving as an additional teaching voice for the church.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and teaching team on sermon planning, series development, and the overall teaching direction of College Ave.
  • Prepare and deliver biblically faithful, engaging, and practical messages that help people understand Scripture and follow Jesus.
  • Teach Scripture in ways that connect with a multigenerational congregation and encourage spiritual growth.
Teach in Other Church Environments
  • Lead or contribute to baptism courses, discipleship classes, membership environments, workshops, and other church-wide teaching opportunities.
  • Help people understand the foundations of the Christian faith and take next steps in following Jesus.
  • Develop or contribute to teaching materials and resources as needed.
  • Adapt teaching to different audiences, settings, and stages of spiritual maturity.
Strengthen Discipleship and Spiritual Formation
  • Partner with ministry leaders to identify opportunities to help people grow in biblical understanding and spiritual maturity.
  • Support the church’s broader discipleship efforts by equipping people to live out their faith and make disciples.
  • Help connect biblical teaching with the everyday life of the church, including relationships, community, service, and spiritual growth.
Lead and Collaborate
  • Work closely with the Senior Pastor and staff to support the church’s teaching and discipleship priorities.
  • Participate in sermon planning, staff collaboration, and ministry meetings as appropriate to the role.
  • Build relationships across the church and remain attentive to the questions, needs, and spiritual growth of the congregation.
  • Approach teaching as an act of pastoral service, using your gifts to strengthen the church rather than build a personal platform.
Alignment with College Ave

All College Ave staff are expected to embrace and support the church’s Statement of Faith, Vision, and Values, and to follow the expectations outlined in the Employee Handbook and applicable staff policies.

Employment Structure and Compensation

We are open to considering full-time or part-time arrangements based on the right candidate and the needs of the church.

Compensation, benefits, schedule, and responsibilities will be determined by the agreed-upon structure, the candidate’s experience, and the scope of the role. Benefits are subject to employment classification and applicable eligibility requirements.

Why San Diego? Why College Ave?

College Ave is a growing church in a unique San Diego community, with opportunities to serve people across generations and backgrounds. We want our teaching to be deeply rooted in Scripture, centered on Jesus, and connected to the everyday lives of the people we serve.

This is an opportunity to use your teaching gifts to help a local church grow in biblical understanding and faithfulness—Sunday services and throughout the life of the church.

Requirements
Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a pastor who loves Scripture, enjoys helping people understand and apply biblical truth, and can teach effectively in both larger and smaller settings.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to work well with pastoral staff and ministry leaders.
  • A genuine pastoral heart and a desire to invest in the spiritual growth of the church.
  • Flexibility to teach in a variety of settings, from Sunday services to classes and smaller group environments.
Character and Spiritual Qualifications

The candidate should demonstrate the biblical qualifications for pastoral leadership reflected in 1 Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1:6–9, and 1 Peter 5:1–4.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Demonstrates spiritual maturity, humility, integrity, and a growing relationship with Jesus.
  • Is teachable, accountable, approachable, and committed to personal growth.
  • Handles Scripture faithfully and takes seriously the responsibility of teaching God’s Word.
