The UO Department of Human Physiology is home to undergraduate andgraduate students who desire strong training in human physiologyand anatomy that will prepare them for careers in medicine, alliedhealth professions, and biomedical research.

At the undergraduate level, future researchers, educators,physicians, physical therapists and other health care providersreceive comprehensive, multidisciplinary training in the physical,biological, and chemical sciences that prepares them well forentrance into most professional health care-related programs. HumanPhysiology students also examine the health sciences from aperspective that explores the functional and structural mechanismsunderlying human movement across health and disease, using avariety of physiological methods, ranging from biochemical andsystems techniques through whole body analysis.

The graduate program develops researchers and health professionalswho are creative thinkers and innovators capable of generating newknowledge in the physiological sciences. To this end, thedepartment has several outstanding, funded laboratories that usephysiological and engineering methods to evaluate human subjectsunder a broad spectrum of experimental conditions. The Department'sfaculty members recognize that cutting-edge translational research,from basic physiological mechanisms through integrative systemsphysiology related to health, human movement, and physicalactivity, has a major influence on disease treatment andprevention. Consequently, in the performance of their research,they routinely collaborate with physicians and other clinicalpersonnel.

Position Summary

The Teaching Lab Manager manages the primary teaching labs forHuman Physiology Department, utilizing specialized expertise andtechnical skills in anatomy and physiology to function as a subjectmatter expert to facilitate undergraduate labs in a unit servingapproximately 1200 undergraduate majors. This position has primaryresponsibility and broad authority for all aspects of the unit'sinstructional lab prep, including the health, safety, equipment,and supply needs for the associated classes.

This position helps supervise and support the undergraduate andgraduate student teaching assistants and is responsible for thepreparation and training of lab teaching assistants, maintaininglab supplies and equipment, and updating lab materials and content. The position reports to the Department Head for Human Physiologybut primarily works with Instructors of Record (IOR) under minimalsupervision.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelors degree related to anatomy and physiology.


• One (1) year of experience with human-based physiology labinstruction.

• General knowledge of computer systems used in physiological labsfor data collection and analysis.


• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population andcontribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusionefforts.


• Ability to work in complex frameworks, analyze and prioritizeinformation, and convert ideas and objectives into actions.


• Ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt well tochanges.


• Ability to assess situations independently and determine whatsteps are required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree related to anatomy and physiology.


• Previous experience teaching in college or university-levelsetting.


• Experience with human cadaver dissection and/or willingness tolearn and train with cadaver dissection.


• Supervision or lead work experience.
