Job description

Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology is looking for a Teaching Lab Technician for our undergraduate teaching labs. This technologist will work with a current team of other techs in a dynamic group supporting numerous students per semester. Successful teamwork, enthusiasm for an academic environment, and strong student support skills are essential.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare chemicals, lab equipment, and student drawers for teaching lab.
  • Maintain laboratory facilities, instrumentation, and stockroom for experiments.
  • Plan laboratory exercises with faculty.
  • Test and conduct experiments, exercises, instrumentation, and demonstrations.
  • Provide technical assistance to staff and teaching assistants concerning experimental preparations and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards of laboratory operations.
Work Schedule

The schedule is variable and may be negotiated with the supervisor. Typically, Monday/Wednesday 11:30am–9:30pm and Tuesday/Thursday 8:30am–6:30pm. Evening hours are required. Work schedules may vary semester to semester. Overtime may be required periodically.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or Bio‑Chem preferred.
  • Experience working in and providing technical support for an undergraduate teaching lab.
  • Experience preparing chemical solutions and setting up experiments for undergraduate teaching labs.
  • Experience managing an undergraduate teaching lab facility.
  • Experience working in a team environment.

  • Successful candidate must submit to a post‑offer, pre‑employment physical examination and medical history check.
Salary and Benefits

Hourly: $18.27 – $20.89 per hour (dependent on education and experience). This is a benefits eligible position. The University of New Mexico provides a comprehensive package of benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. Additional educational benefits are available through tuition remission and dependent education programs.
