Summary

The Head Start Teacher develops and implements individual and group educational plans for preschool children, designed to promote social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth appropriate to their developmental stage. Responsibilities include managing daily classroom operations, ensuring legal compliance, and fostering strong partnerships with families to maintain high program standards.

You will report directly to the Center Director or Manager of Education & Inclusion and may supervise Teacher Assistants, seeking support from Program Aides and Volunteers as needed.

As a front-line representative of Save the Children, you are required to ensure the safety and security of children and families, adhering to the organization's core values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaborations, Creativity, and Integrity.

As an employee in contact with children, you must prevent child abuse by maintaining awareness, following best practices, and participating in training to minimize risks. You are responsible for reporting and responding to any instances of child abuse and promoting child-safeguarding awareness.

What You'll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
  1. Develop and implement lesson plans and activities promoting all developmental areas to prepare children for school.
  2. Maintain a safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  3. Build effective relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
  4. Maintain accurate records on paper and online systems.
  5. Ensure confidentiality of children and families.
  6. Conduct observations, assessments, and screenings; maintain ongoing portfolios for each child.
  7. Keep the manager informed of significant issues.
  8. Collaborate with team members to develop their skills and abilities.
  9. Engage children actively and supervise all indoor and outdoor activities.
  10. Utilize the playground safely as an extension of the classroom.
  11. Provide a balanced program of child-initiated and teacher-directed activities.
  12. Assist children during mealtime to promote social and self-help skills.
  13. Meet children's physical needs and assist with health and personal habits.
  14. Encourage parent involvement through classroom activities and home engagement.
  15. Maintain an inventory of classroom equipment and supplies annually.
  16. Conduct conferences and home visits to update parents on children's progress.
  17. Participate in professional development and follow a growth plan.
  18. Ensure compliance with Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  19. Implement active supervision to ensure child safety at all times.
  20. Document and mobilize matching-in-kind activities, goods, and services.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in child development, early childhood education, or related field, with relevant coursework and experience teaching preschool children.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and take initiative.
  • Knowledge of Head Start/Early Head Start program purposes.
  • Proven ability to relate sensitively with children.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Participation in professional development, including first aid and CPR as required.
  • Physical ability to perform medium to heavy work, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and performing related activities.
  • Successful background check and health requirements clearance.
  • Valid driver's license if operating a vehicle for job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish or other languages).
  • North Carolina Birth-Kindergarten (B-K) Licensure preferred.
