Job description

Position Title: Early Head Start Teacher I

Summary


The Early Head Start Teacher develops and implements individual and group educational plans for infants and toddlers, promoting social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth appropriate to their developmental stages. Typically, two Early Head Start Teachers collaborate in each classroom to lead child development activities, supported by Program Aides and Volunteers.


In partnership with a Co-Teacher, you will oversee the daily operations of the classroom, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. You will foster strong relationships with families and maintain high standards of program quality. You will report directly to the Center Director or Manager of Education & Inclusion.


As a frontline representative of Save the Children, you are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of children and families, adhering to the organization's core values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity.


You are expected to prevent child abuse by maintaining mental awareness, following good practices, and participating in training. You must act to protect children at risk, report concerns, and promote child safeguarding awareness.


What You'll Be Doing (Essential Duties)


  1. Collaborate with a Co-Teacher to develop and implement educational activities that promote all developmental areas, preparing children for preschool.
  2. Guide and facilitate daily classroom activities and field trips.
  3. Set up and maintain a safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  4. Practice responsive caregiving, incorporating routines into flexible learning schedules.
  5. Conduct conferences and home visits to inform and involve parents in their child's development and learning.
  6. Maintain accurate records on paper and online systems.
  7. Ensure confidentiality regarding children and families.
  8. Observe, assess, and document children's development, maintaining portfolios with observations, work samples, and assessments.
  9. Work with Program Aides and Volunteers to enhance their planning and execution skills.
  10. Implement active supervision to ensure child safety at all times, including on the playground.
  11. Assist children during mealtime and promote social and self-help skills.
  12. Meet children's physical needs, including health and personal habits.
  13. Engage parents in their children's education through involvement and home activities.
  14. Maintain an inventory of classroom equipment and supplies annually.
  15. Develop and document professional development plans, engaging in relevant training.
  16. Keep the classroom clean and organized.
  17. Document and mobilize matching-in-kind activities, goods, and services.
  18. Flexibility to stay until children are picked up may be required.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


  • Associate degree in child development, early childhood education, or related field, with relevant coursework and preschool teaching experience.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and take initiative.
  • Knowledge of Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
  • Ability to relate sensitively with children.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Participation in professional development, including first aid and pediatric CPR certification as required.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 5-10 pounds constantly. Includes activities like sitting, crawling, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping, with repetitive motions and keyboarding.


Pre-employment background checks and health requirements are mandatory. Valid driver's license and compliance with vehicle operation policies are required.


Preference will be given to current or former Head Start/Early Head Start parents who meet qualifications.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Bilingual in English/Spanish or other languages used by families.
  • North Carolina B-K Licensure preferred if applicable.
