Purpose Statement

The job of Middle School Teacher is to provide support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibilities for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and/or individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to address instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

This job reports to the principal.

Essential Functions

  • Administers subject‑specific assessments, district and/or state tests (e.g., MAP) to assess student competency levels and/or develop individual learning plans.
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement or reinforcing classroom goals at home.
  • Analyzes test data and plans instructional responses to enhance student achievement.
  • Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations and/or goals to provide feedback to students, parents, administration and/or seek assistance of district specialists.
  • Collaborates with professional learning communities, instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, business partners, and a variety of community resources to improve overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject‑specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
  • Differentiates classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning within established lesson plans.
  • Directs para‑professionals, volunteers and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program that addresses the needs of individual students.
  • Facilitates student learning (e.g., creating a learning environment, integrating technology, arranging field trips, organizing age‑appropriate activities) to achieve success in academics, interpersonal, and daily living skills through delivered lesson plans.
  • Instructs students to improve their success in academics through a defined course of study.
  • Interacts continually with students to educate them.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non‑confidential manual and electronic files and records to provide up‑to‑date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (classroom, campus grounds, field trips, clubs, sporting events, graduation, dances) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings (PLC, staff, student support, grade‑level) to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a variety of written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, lesson plans, progress reports) to document student progress and meet mandated requirements.
  • Reports incidents (fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment and adhere to education code and school policies.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources (students, teachers, parents, administrators) to resolve issues, provide information and/or direction.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills. Specific skill‑based competencies include applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment and software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge required to conduct algebra and/or geometry; read technical information; compose documents; facilitate group discussions; analyze situations. Competencies include appropriate codes, policies, laws; age‑appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; behavioral management strategies.

Ability required to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather, collate, classify data; use job‑related equipment. Flexibility to work with others; work with data using defined processes; operate equipment with standardized methods. Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups; utilize job‑related equipment. Problem‑solving to analyze issues and create action plans; independent interpretation of guidelines; moderate equipment troubleshooting. Working Environment
