Job Description

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • A. MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Instructional Time – The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of the lesson, gets the class started quickly, gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • B. MAJOR FUNCTION: Management of Student Behavior – The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures governing routine administrative matters, student verbal participation, talk during activities, student movement, and frequently monitors behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly, and maintains student dignity.
  • C. MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Presentation – The teacher begins the lesson with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents using understandable language, provides examples, assigns tasks with high success, asks appropriate questions, conducts lesson at a brisk pace, makes smooth transitions, and summarizes the main points.
  • D. MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance – The teacher maintains clear standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral and written assessments, and poses clear questions.
  • E. MAJOR FUNCTION: Instructional Feedback – The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work, supplies prompt feedback on out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and gives sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses.
  • F. MAJOR FUNCTION: Facilitating Instruction – The teacher has an instructional plan aligned with curricular goals, uses diagnostic data to develop objectives, maintains records, aligns resources, and supports the program.
  • G. MAJOR FUNCTION: Interacting Within the Educational Environment – The teacher treats all students fairly, and interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and community.
  • H. MAJOR FUNCTION: Performing Non-Instructional Duties – The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, follows laws and policies, and demonstrates professional development.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS – Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Degree in education or a related field that qualifies for licensure as an EC Teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use classroom tools, exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Requirements consistent with Light Work.
