Job summary

Midland Independent School District is seeking a Teacher Assistant for Life Skills at Henderson Elementary in Midland, TX. Immediate start to assist the classroom teacher with care and instruction of students in SPED Life Skills.

Responsibilities include following supervisor directions, preparing materials, supporting discipline and safety, and assisting with equipment and self-help needs. Requires TEA Educational Aide Certificate, high school diploma, and SPED experience.

Qualifications

  • Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense).
  • Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification.
  • 1. hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher;
  • 2. have satisfied one of the following requirements: a) three creditable years of experience as educational aide I/II; b) 30 semester hours of college credit with focus on child growth/development; 3. experience with students/parents as approved by the superintendent.

Job Description

POSITION: Teacher Assistant, Life Skills

EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt

NUMBER OF DAYS: According to district approved calendar

DEPARTMENT: Teaching and Learning

REPORTS TO: Principal, Supervising Teacher, Special Services Supervisor

SUPERVISES: None

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED and/or 30 semester hours of an accredited college or university
  • Educational Aide Certificate from state of Texas

EXPERIENCE:

  • Some experience working with special education children

Position Function/Purpose

To assist the classroom teacher in the care and instruction of the students in the classroom.

Essential Functions

1. Follow the directions of the supervisor

2. Preparing materials and displays as directed

3. Demonstrating acceptable written and verbal skills

4. Working in a cooperative manner with both teacher and students

5. Assisting the teacher in maintaining student discipline

6. Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care and safety of students

7. Assisting the teacher in assuming responsibility for the care of equipment and teaching materials

8. Changing diapers for students

9. Toileting students

10. Feeding or assisting with feeding students

11. Assisting with lifting students

12. Assisting students with other self-help skills

13. Blending foods

14. Cooking foods

15. Assisting with loading and unloading students

16. All other duties as assigned by the supervisor

NOTE: A teacher assistant in special education is subject to reassignment during the year because of student population shifts.

Qualification Requirements

  • Possess, or be willing to apply for, a TEA Educational Aide Certificate (personal expense)
  • Educational Aide certificate as established by the State Board for Educator Certification. The applicant for the educational aide certificate shall

1. hold a high school diploma, the equivalent of a high school diploma, or higher;

2. have satisfied one of the following requirements:

a. has three creditable years of experience, as defined in Chapter 153, Subchapter CC, of this title (relating to Commissioner's Rules on Creditable Years of Service), as either an educational aide I or II;

b. has completed 30 semester credit hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas;

3. and have experience working with students and parents as approved by the employing superintendent.
