Streamwood Behavioral Healthcare System (SBHS) is seeking a Teacher Assistant/Paraprofessional to support students under the direction of the Principal. This full-time role helps deliver educational and behavioral programs designed to maximize each student’s potential and self-esteem.

Under the teacher’s leadership, you assist in classroom management, model positive behavior, monitor safety, and help with behavior charts, grading, and instructional tasks.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• ISBE Paraprofessional certificate and ISBE Substitute Teacher Certificate are required.
• Illinois driver's license with no suspensions or tickets for major traffic violations for at least three years.

Responsibilities

• Moves around classroom to facilitate learning and supervise students.
• Communicates effectively with the teacher and staff.
• Assists in grading objective homework as directed by the teacher.
• Maintains student behavior plans and safety protocols.
• Prepares and updates Behavior Charts in collaboration with the teacher.
• Assists in instructional tasks and material duplication as directed by the classroom teacher.
• Applies crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to maintain a safe environment.

Teacher Assistant / Paraprofessional

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Principal, the Para Professional Aide provides students with educational and behavioral programs that will enable them to reach their fullest educational potential, while rebuilding their self-esteem.

Assist teacher in the academic process that includes assisting in management of the classroom environment under the teacher’s leadership. Acts as a positive role model for students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Actively moves around classroom to facilitate student’s learning.
2. Communicates effectively with teacher.
3. Available to all students by physical proximity as well as by visual contact.
4. Encourages continued student engagement without disrupting classroom instructions
5. Encourages students to make choices appropriate to classroom and school environment.
6. Demonstrates ability to manage student behavior during instructional interaction.
7. Develops awareness of each student’s special needs.
8. Demonstrates consistent awareness for each student’s safety and whereabouts.
9. Assists in maintaining required behavior management plans.
10. Works in collaboration with teacher and principal regarding school projects and students needs.
11. Prepare and maintain each student’s Behavior Charts on a daily and quarterly basis in collaboration with the teacher.
12. Assist in the grading of objective homework assignments as directed by the teacher.
13. Assist in the instructional process as directed by the teacher.
14. Assist in the duplication of instructional material as directed by the classroom teacher.
15. Utilizes knowledge and skills related to crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation in order to provide a safe environment for students, visitors and staff.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is REQUIRED. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Knowledge of educational, child development and classroom teaching/management theories with a good understanding of educational and therapeutic interventions is preferred. It is required to possess a valid Illinois driver’s license with no suspensions or tickets for major traffic violations for at least three years

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: I.S.B.E. Paraprofessional certificate and I.S.B.E. Substitute Teacher Certificate is required. Primary Source Verification is required.
