Teacher Assistant – Full‑Time – Elementary

Chariho Regional School District — Wood River Junction, Rhode Island.

Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026

Overview

The Chariho Regional School District is accepting applications for full‑time District Teacher Assistants, working 7 hours per day, 180 days per year, currently assigned to an elementary school. Candidates must be comfortable working with students who have toileting and positioning needs.

Applicants must have completed a certified Teacher Assistant training course and passed the ParaPro exam, or hold an Associate’s Degree or higher in an education‑related field.

Nature of Work

Paraprofessional work of an instructional, therapeutic, or personal nature in an educational setting with individuals or small groups of students with moderate to severe developmental, cognitive, learning, physical, and/or social‑emotional disabilities.

Assist teachers or supervisors in the design, implementation, and evaluation of program activities to ensure high learning and performance levels for students.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follow all school district policies and procedures.
  • Maintain effective professional communication and collaboration with classroom teachers.
  • Assist the classroom teacher with reinforcement of curriculum in all core areas.
  • Work with students on an individual basis or in small groups.
  • Help bring students’ achievement standards to proficiency levels.
  • Monitor/evaluate student achievement and classroom performance.
  • Correct students’ work when the teacher provides an answer key.
  • Monitor behavior management and disciplinary plans, keeping accurate records.
  • Interact with students in a developmentally appropriate and positive manner.
  • Assist in setting up Individualized Education Plan meetings.
  • Copy students’ paperwork as needed.
  • Provide support by setting up work area, displays, bulletin boards, operating equipment, and distributing/collecting papers, supplies, and materials.
  • Assist on field trips when educationally necessary and approved.
  • Perform other duties within the building such as recess, skills, hall, lunchroom, or bus as assigned by the principal or supervisor.
  • Participate in required professional development programs designed for staff development.
  • Perform responsibilities unique to teachers assisting medically fragile and/or physically handicapped students (lifting, self‑help skills, positioning, transferring, etc.).
  • Perform responsibilities unique to teachers assisting students with developmental, cognitive, learning, physical, and/or social‑emotional disabilities.
  • Implement procedures, protocols, and interventions unique to individual student or classroom needs (positive behavioral supports, communication systems, physical transfers, toileting, self‑help skills, visual supports, sensory diets, feeding protocols, and Crisis Prevention and Intervention techniques).
  • Participate in professional development programs designed for individual students or classrooms.
  • Interact with students in a developmentally appropriate, respectful, consistent, and empathetic manner.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and a desire to work with the students to whom they are assigned.

  • Exhibit interpersonal skills with students and adults to help create and maintain a positive learning environment.
Minimum Education, Certification, and Training/Experience
  • Good character.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Completed and passed a Rhode Island certified Teacher Assistant Training Class.
  • Passed the ParaPro Assessment with a score of 461 or higher (demonstrating competency in knowledge and instructional skills in reading, writing, and math) or have an Associate’s Degree or higher in an education‑related field.
