Job summary

Clear Creek Amana School seeks a Sign Language Interpreter to support deaf or hard-of-hearing students by providing classroom interpretation and facilitating communication with teachers and staff.

The role requires Iowa licensure (or conditional licensure) and a collaborative approach within the education team. Hours run 7:30-11:00 AM for 10 months, with reasonable accommodations as needed.

Qualifications

• Experience with children is preferred but not required.
• Post-secondary coursework in educational field is preferred but not required.

Job description

TITLE: Sign Language Interpreter

LOCATION: Tiffin Elementary (Tiffin, IA)

HOURS: 7:30-11:00 AM, 10 months

Assist teachers in providing access to communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing to maximize the educational opportunities available within the school community. This position involves interpreting classroom instruction and facilitating communication between students and teachers within the classroom and other school-based settings.

Qualifications

• Must be licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health through the Iowa Board of Sign Language Interpreters and Transliterators, or willing to work with the district to obtain conditional licensure through the Iowa Department of Public Health with demonstration of a base-level sign language proficiency.
• Previous experience working with children is preferred but not required
• Post-secondary coursework in educational field is preferred but not required
• Initiative to be a self-starter
• Intuitive to the needs of the student
• Ability to work collaboratively with the classroom teacher, support staff, administrators, AEA, and parents of the student, as part of the student's educational team
• Ability to use good judgment when unexpected problems arise
• Ability to use basic office equipment
• May be assigned other related duties in addition to those listed above

Specific Duties

• Provide accurate and effective sign language interpretation for classroom instruction, social interactions with students and teachers, and school activities.
• Plan with teacher to prepare for interpreting.
• Assist in the implementation and monitoring of students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
• Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment
• Participate in IEP meetings to provide team critical information about appropriate supportive communication strategies throughout the student's school day
• Assist in accurate documentation related to student communication
• Perform other activities as required by building principal or teachers
