The City of New York's Department of Finance, Office of the Taxpayer Advocate, seeks a Taxpayer Case Advocate to assist taxpayers with complex issues, identify systemic problems, and prepare reports for the Commissioner of Finance. The role may liaise with Council Members and Borough Presidents' offices.

The incumbent will interview taxpayers, counsel on case issues, and work to resolve problems through DOF offices, with potential remote work up to two days per week.

Qualifikationen

• Bachelor's degree in an area related to community work or equivalent with 2 years of related experience.
• High school diploma with 6 years of related experience; at least 1 year of experience as described.
• Equivalent combination of education/experience with required minimums.

Aufgaben

• Interview taxpayers to determine tax situations and explain notices and DOF correspondence.
• Counsel taxpayers on basic case issues and advocate for the taxpayer with DOF offices.
• Confer with taxpayers to explain actions, applicable laws, and appeal rights.
• Perform research and computations to adjust taxpayers' accounts as needed.
• Explain actions taken and secure agreement of taxpayer and DOF on final decisions.
• Assist with developing outreach plans within communities and advocacy groups.
• Maintain the Taxpayer Case Management system and track cases and inquiries.
• Participate in guidance activities for target audiences on case advocacy and authorities.
• Assist the Taxpayer Advocate with annual or periodic reports as required.
• Answer telephone calls to determine if cases meet criteria for handling.
