Job description

What You'll Do

As a Tax Manager on Avalara’s global tax team, you will report to the Tax Senior Director and focus on accounting for income taxes across Avalara's global entities as well as U.S. federal and state income tax matters including compliance, audits, and planning. The Tax Manager can be remote within the United States. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be
  • Perform the global tax accounting and reporting lifecycle, including quarterly and annual income tax provisions, taxes payable, effective tax rate analysis, uncertain tax positions, and related financial statement disclosures.
  • Prepare and/or review calculations, forms, and other information necessary for U.S. federal, state, and international income tax compliance, provision, credits, and forecasting—collaborating with internal stakeholders and external advisors.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the timeliness, accuracy, and efficiency of income tax provision and compliance processes.
  • Monitor, document, and execute SOX tax controls; recommend and implement improvements to strengthen the tax control environment.
  • Support the design and implementation of scalable tax reporting and compliance solutions aligned with global business expansion and evolving tax laws, regulations, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of income tax forecasts to support financial reporting, estimated payments, and cash tax planning.
  • Execute complex cross-functional tax projects in collaboration with Accounting, Finance, Legal, and other business partners.
What You’ll Need To Be Successful
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or advanced degree (MST/JD/LLM) is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in public accounting and/or in industry.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with an understanding of ASC 740 and income tax accounting principles applicable to global entities.
  • Broad experience with U.S. federal and state income tax compliance, including preparation or review of Forms 1120 and state equivalents.
  • Strong research, analytical, and documentation skills with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Excel for tax data analysis and reconciliations.
  • Experience with ONESOURCE Tax Provision (OTP) preferred.
  • Familiarity with general ledger systems; experience with NetSuite a plus.

Pay Range Details


The base pay range(s) below are provided in compliance with state specific laws. Pay ranges may be
different in other locations.


Colorado $97,400-$155,000 (annually)
Washington $97,400-$155,000 (annually)
California $97,400-$175,000(annually)
NYC $107,600-$175,000 (annually)


The pay range above is the general base pay range for a successful candidate in the state listed. The successful candidate’s actual salary/wage may be based on various factors, such as geographic location, candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.


This role is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance, depending on the terms of the applicable plan and the employee’s role.
