Job description

Lead the Work. Develop the Team. Make an Impact.
If you're a hands-on tax professional who enjoys solving problems, developing people, improving processes, and finding opportunities to add value, we'd love to hear from you.
Who We Are

At Ben E. Keith, our 120-year success is built on strong relationships, talented people, and a commitment to doing business the right way. Our teams work across the organization to support a complex, growing business and provide the expertise needed to keep our operations moving forward.

The Tax team plays an important role in protecting the company, identifying opportunities, strengthening processes, and providing practical guidance to business partners. We're looking for a Tax Manager who enjoys being close to the work, solving complex problems, and helping others grow.

As Tax Manager, you'll have the opportunity to deepen your technical expertise, develop your leadership capabilities, expand your influence across the business, and help shape how our tax processes and technology evolve.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

This isn't a role where you'll simply review work from the sidelines. As Tax Manager, you'll be a hands-on leader who stays actively involved in the work while helping develop the team and strengthen our state and local tax processes.

You’ll have the opportunity to combine technical tax expertise with leadership, problem-solving, business partnership, and continuous improvement.

Bring More Than Tax Expertise

Technical knowledge matters, but we're looking for more than a tax expert. We want someone who is approachable, curious, resourceful, and comfortable working across the business.

The strongest candidates will enjoy digging into complex tax questions, sharing what they know, developing others, and partnering with teams outside of Tax to find practical solutions. You'll have the opportunity to bring your ideas and personality to the role while building strong relationships throughout the organization.

Why You'll Love This Role
  • Take ownership of meaningful state and local tax work while remaining hands‑on
  • Lead, coach, and develop team members while continuing to grow your own expertise
  • Research complex tax issues and influence business decisions
  • Identify exemptions, credits, refunds, and other potential tax‑saving opportunities
  • Partner with Accounts Payable, Procurement, IT, Operations, and other areas of the business
  • Help improve tax technology, data quality, processes, controls, and documentation
  • Work with SAP, Vertex, and evolving technology, including responsible use of AI‑assisted research tools
  • Make a visible impact within a well‑established organization
What You Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Progressive experience in tax, accounting, or a related field, with significant state and local tax exposure preferred
  • Experience with multistate sales and use tax compliance, taxability analysis, and tax research
  • Ability to independently research and interpret state and local tax laws, regulations, and authoritative guidance
  • Ability to analyze business transactions and determine appropriate tax treatment
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles and business operations
  • Strong analytical, research, problem‑solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment when evaluating tax positions, risks, and opportunities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Taxation, or a related field is preferred. A relevant combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of progressive tax, accounting, or related experience
  • Significant state and local tax (SALT) experience
  • Experience supporting or managing state and local tax audits and Information Document Requests (IDRs)
  • Experience developing tax procedures, processes, and internal controls
  • Experience identifying exemptions, credits, refunds, recoveries, or other tax savings opportunities
  • SAP or similar ERP experience
  • Vertex or similar sales tax technology experience
  • Advanced Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, filters, and pivot tables
  • Experience within distribution or consumer products
Key Skills
  • Strong state and local tax knowledge
  • Analytical thinking and sound judgment
  • Research and problem-solving
  • Coaching and team development
  • Clear, practical communication
  • Cross‑functional relationship building
  • Process improvement and continuous improvement mindset
  • Strong organization and attention to detail
  • Ability to balance hands‑on execution with leadership responsibilities
  • Comfort learning and using technology to improve efficiency and decision‑making
What It's Like to Work Here

When you join Ben E. Keith, you can expect:

  • A hands‑on role where you're connected to the work and the business
  • Opportunities to solve challenging tax questions rather than simply administer processes
  • A collaborative environment where your expertise and recommendations are valued
  • Exposure to multiple business functions and enterprise‑wide initiatives
  • Opportunities to improve systems, processes, controls, and technology
  • The ability to develop others while continuing to strengthen your own technical expertise
  • A team environment where knowledge sharing, collaboration, and personality matter

You'll have the opportunity to become a trusted tax resource across the organization while helping the team continuously improve how the work gets done.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, success means:

  • Sales and use tax responsibilities are completed accurately, thoroughly, and on time.
  • Tax risks are identified early and addressed with practical, well‑researched solutions.
  • Exemptions, refunds, credits, and other tax‑saving opportunities are proactively identified and appropriately supported.
  • Tax audits are organized, well documented, and effectively managed.
  • Processes, controls, documentation, and data quality continue to improve.
