Job description

Lead Tax Strategy. Drive Compliance. Shape the Future of the Tax Function.

Are you an experienced tax professional ready to step beyond managing compliance and take ownership of a broader, strategic tax function?

Our client is seeking an accomplished Director of Tax to lead and develop its tax function within a sophisticated, multi-entity organization. This is a highly visible opportunity for a tax leader who can combine deep technical expertise with strategic thinking, strong business judgment and the ability to partner effectively with senior leadership.

The Director of Tax will oversee federal, state and local tax matters, tax compliance and reporting, tax planning, technical research, tax accounting, audits and strategic tax initiatives. This individual will serve as a key advisor to senior management while partnering closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal and other internal stakeholders, as well as external tax advisors.

This is an opportunity to build upon and enhance the tax function, influence business decisions and make a meaningful impact on the organization's continued growth.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is much more than a tax compliance leadership role. The Director of Tax will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead and further develop the organization's overall tax function
  • Establish tax strategies that support the company's business objectives
  • Serve as a trusted tax advisor to senior leadership and management
  • Oversee complex federal, state and local tax matters
  • Drive tax planning and identify opportunities to improve the organization's tax position
  • Evaluate the tax implications of acquisitions, organizational changes and other strategic initiatives
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and service providers
  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and proactively assess their impact on the organization
  • Oversee tax audits, examinations, IRS correspondence and other governmental inquiries
  • Strengthen tax processes, controls, documentation and reporting
  • Develop, mentor and lead tax professionals
  • Partner with Finance and Accounting on tax accounting and reporting matters
  • Help shape the future direction and structure of the tax organization
What You'll Do

As the Director of Tax, you will have broad responsibility for the organization's tax function, including:

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of federal, state and local tax compliance, planning and reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of federal, state and local income tax returns, supporting schedules, workpapers and related documentation.
  • Oversee monthly taxable income calculations, quarterly estimated tax payments, member tax distributions and other tax-related calculations, as applicable.
  • Lead tax planning initiatives designed to optimize the organization's tax position while managing risk and ensuring compliance.
  • Research, analyze and resolve complex tax issues and develop well-supported technical conclusions.
  • Monitor federal and state tax legislation, regulations, IRS guidance and other developments and proactively assess their potential impact on the organization.
  • Serve as a key tax advisor to senior leadership and provide practical, business-focused guidance on tax matters.
  • Partner with Finance, Accounting, Legal and other internal stakeholders on tax-related matters and strategic business decisions.
  • Evaluate the tax implications of acquisitions, dispositions, restructurings, entity formations, organizational changes and other strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee tax audits, examinations, IRS correspondence and governmental inquiries and coordinate responses with external advisors.
  • Oversee tax provisions, tax accounting calculations and other tax-related financial reporting matters.
  • Manage and evaluate relationships with external accounting firms, tax advisors and other service providers.
  • Establish appropriate processes, controls and documentation to support a strong and efficient tax function.
  • Identify opportunities to improve tax processes, technology, compliance and overall department efficiency.
  • Serve as the organization's primary internal resource for complex tax questions and communicate technical tax matters effectively to non-tax professionals.
  • Collaborate with the State & Local Tax team and other tax professionals to ensure an integrated overall tax strategy.
  • Lead, mentor and develop tax professionals while establishing performance expectations and supporting professional growth.
  • Build strong relationships across the organization and promote a proactive, collaborative approach to tax.
  • Provide management with tax-related analysis, insights and recommendations that support informed business decisions.
  • Participate in special projects and other strategic initiatives as directed by senior leadership.
What We're Looking For
  • 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including significant public accounting and/or corporate tax experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
  • CPA certification strongly preferred
  • Master's degree in Taxation or related field a plus
  • Strong federal AND/OR state and local income tax experience
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing complex tax compliance and reporting activities
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state income tax laws, regulations and reporting requirements
  • Proven ability to research, analyze and resolve complex tax issues
  • Demonstrated experience with tax planning and developing strategies that support business objectives
  • Experience managing tax audits, IRS correspondence and relationships with external tax advisors
  • Experience working within a complex, multi-entity corporate environment
  • Experience with acquisitions, organizational changes, restructuring or other strategic transactions preferred
  • Strong understanding of tax accounting and financial reporting requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to assess the business impact of changing tax legislation and provide actionable recommendations
  • Proven leadership and people-development skills
  • Exceptional analytical, research and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex tax concepts into clear business recommendations
  • Strong business judgment and the ability to balance tax optimization with compliance and risk management
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, evolving environment
The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a strategic tax leader—not simply a technical tax expert. You may currently be a Senior Tax Manager, Tax Director or experienced public accounting tax professional who is ready to take broader ownership of a corporate tax function.

You bring strong technical tax knowledge, but equally important, you know how to lead, influence, communicate and partner with the business. You're comfortable working with senior executives, external advisors and cross-functional teams, and you're energized by the opportunity to build processes, solve complex problems and make a measurable impact.

Ready for Your Next Step?

If you're an experienced tax professional ready to move beyond traditional compliance and take on a broader leadership role, this is an opportunity to make your mark.

You'll have the visibility, responsibility and autonomy to influence tax strategy, strengthen the tax function and serve as a trusted advisor to the organization.

Bring your tax expertise, leadership and strategic perspective to an organization where they will truly matter.
