Job description

The Tax Manager is a hands-on, individual-contributor role responsible for managing the company’s tax compliance processes and calendar. This person will prepare, review, and file returns in a consultative manner with external tax advisors using scalable and proactive processes and procedures. This is an ideal next step for a strong Senior Tax Associate ready to own a process from start to finish and take on a Manager-level title and scope of ownership, without the responsibility of supervising staff.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA reporting to the office on a hybrid schedule 3+ days per week in office.

Responsibilities
  • Own the end-to-end workflow for federal, multi-state, and local income tax compliance calendar, ensuring accurate and timely filings across all jurisdictions where the company has nexus
  • Prepare and/or review corporate income tax returns, excise tax, quarterly estimates and payments, and extensions
  • Manage and prepare the annual income tax provision process, including documentation, apportionment, and footnote disclosures for the financial audit
  • Monitor state and local tax law changes and assess impact on the company’s multi-state filing obligations, apportionment, and nexus footprint
  • Manage relationships with outside tax advisors including scoping work and reviewing deliverables
  • Maintain and improve tax compliance workpapers, calendars, and internal controls/documentation
  • Respond to and manage state and federal tax notices, audits, and inquiries
  • Partner with Accounting/Finance on tax-related general ledger accounts, reconciliations, and reporting
  • Lead the tax analysis and strategy as it relates to M&A
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy of the tax function
  • Research technical tax issues and prepare clear, well-documented conclusions for both internal use and audit purposes
  • Build the sales and use tax function from the ground up, complying with a variety of states across several legal entities
  • Lead the filings for personal property tax returns across a lease portfolio of approximately 50 properties and several dozen jurisdictions
Skills/Abilities
  • Ideally 5 years of progressive corporate tax experience, ideally including multi-state income tax compliance
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA certification (active or in progress) preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal and multi-state corporate income tax rules
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a full compliance cycle (not just support one)
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort owning deadlines without supervisory backup
  • Ability to research technical tax issues and clearly document conclusions

Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000 annually, based on experience, with eligibility to participate in the company's bonus program
