Job summary

The Keller Group in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a Director of Tax & Accounting to lead and oversee tax and accounting deliverables within a respected professional services firm. This senior role emphasizes technical autonomy, high-quality client service, and mentorship of the team.

The ideal candidate will have CPA/EA credentials, 5+ years in public accounting, and a proven ability to manage complex tax returns (1040, partnerships, S-corps, C-corps) while driving service growth and risk controls.

Qualifications

  • Active CPA or EA in good standing; CPA strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of public accounting experience.
  • Experience reviewing tax returns and workpapers.
  • Experience with individual and business tax returns (1040, partnership, S-corporation, and C-corporation).
  • Experience with accounting services and financial reporting.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise accounting or tax professionals.
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze tax returns and accounting deliverables.
  • Perform final review and sign-off on tax returns.
  • Exercise sound technical judgment regarding tax positions, risk tolerance, and methodologies.
  • Research and document conclusions on tax matters.
  • Stay current on changes in tax laws and regulations and apply them appropriately.
  • Help manage technical and compliance risk for both clients and the organization.
  • Maintain high standards for accuracy, quality, and client service.
  • Develop, train, and mentor accounting and tax professionals.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback on technical work.
  • Support the professional development and growth of team members.
  • Establish and reinforce consistent technical and quality standards.
  • Serve as a senior point of contact for assigned clients.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Communicate complex tax and accounting matters clearly and effectively.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen client relationships and expand services.
  • Support client retention through high-quality work and responsive services.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services within existing client base.
  • Develop and maintain referral relationships with professional partners and other business contacts.
  • Participate in prospect meetings, scoping, and pricing discussions.
  • Assist in converting prospective clients into engagements.
  • Represent the organization professionally within the business community.

The Director of Tax & Accounting will serve as a senior technical leader within an established professional services organization. What You'll Own

  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment and manage competing priorities
  • Experience in a smaller organization or growth-oriented environment is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to build and improve processes rather than simply follow established procedures
