The University of South Florida in Tampa invites applications for a Tax Compliance Analyst (Finance).

This role supports the Tax Director with university tax compliance across reporting systems and IRS guidance, partnering with campus departments on unrelated business income tax (UBIT), sales and use tax, employee compensation, nonresident alien tax, scholarships, fellowships, grants, and other higher education tax issues to facilitate institutional compliance and mitigate tax-related risk.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • Master's degree in Accounting with CPA preferred; tax specialization advantageous.
  • 1–2 years of university tax or comparable public accounting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in processing payments to non-US citizens and corporations for US tax determinations.
  • Develop and maintain tax compliance processes and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and review tax filings and related schedules (e.g., Form 990T, state filings).
  • Research tax implications of university transactions (UBIT, sales tax, scholarships, grants) and provide guidance.

Tax Compliance Analyst (Finance)

Position supports the Tax Director with university tax compliance needs. The role requires the ability to work independently across various tax reporting and university accounting systems, as well as the ability to interpret and apply IRS tax code, Treasury regulations, and other relevant guidance. The position collaborates with stakeholders across multiple campus departments on unrelated business income tax (UBIT), sales and use tax, employee compensation, nonresident alien tax compliance, scholarships, fellowships, grants, and other higher education tax issues to facilitate institutional compliance and mitigate tax-related risk.

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Accounting

Preferred: Master's degree in Accounting, tax specialization with a CPA. 1-2 years university tax or comparable public accounting/ other corporate tax experience.

  • Assists team responsible for processing payments to non-US citizens and corporations with various issues including US income tax determinations, developing processes and procedures, reconciling taxes withheld from university payments to both IRS deposits and amounts reported on IRS Forms 1042 and 1042S and other related matters as needed.
    • Recommends updates to comply with federal and state tax laws and regulations.
    • Prepares IRS Form 990T Unrelated Business Income Tax Return and state FL Form F-1120 using approved e-filing software.
    • Develops and maintains supporting schedules, calculations, and documentation to substantiate tax reporting positions for accurate and timely tax filings.
  • Gathers information, prepares initial research, outlines implications/ drafts recommendations, and prepares documentation and/or tax filings related to various university transactions, including but not limited to:
    • Unrelated business income tax,
    • Sales tax,
    • Non-resident alien,
    • Independent contractor vs employee determinations,
    • Scholarship/fellowships vs compensation and other grant related payment classifications.
    • Prepares tax training guidance and participates in presentations for university departments as needed.
  • Participates in university revenue generating contract and sponsorship review.
  • Assists with identifying and preparing updates as needed to university online business processes (OBPs).
  • Attends university tax conferences and tax peer group meetings; participates in group email and meeting discussions.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills in excel and Microsoft Office products.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
