Job summary

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts seeks Tax Auditor I–III to join the Audit Division. Responsibilities include preparing for entry‑level tax audits, reviewing records, and conducting audits to ensure compliance with Texas tax laws.

The position requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting/ finance/ business with accounting coursework, plus applicable licenses, with initial in‑office work and travel training in Austin, Dallas or Houston; teleworking may be allowed after six

Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting/finance/business with accounting coursework, or a degree with 24 semester hours of accounting.
Experience as a Tax Auditor may be considered for higher entry levels.
Licenses/certifications: Valid Driver's License, Proof of Automobile Insurance, 36 months driving record.

Responsibilities

Prepares for audit engagement on entry-level tax audits.
Establishes audit period; reviews current audit file and prior findings per division policy.
Follows procedures to conduct audits on entry-level tax audits.
Conducts entrance conference to identify records and review taxpayer's accounting system.
Develops audit plan and tests internal controls; performs reconciliations.
Inspects taxpayer books/records for compliance and documents exceptions.
Prepares audit reports conforming to agency policy.
Verifies data entries and prepares audit schedules with tax projections.
