Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is seeking Tax Auditors I–III for the Audit Division. The role starts January 15, 2026 and involves preparing for audits, reviewing records, testing controls, and documenting findings.

In-office training lasts six months with travel to training centers in Austin, Dallas, or Houston. Teleworking is permitted after training. Salary ranges shown: $5,416.67–$6,562.50 per month in Texas, with annual evaluations based on qualifications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting; finance degree with 12 accounting hours; or bachelor’s/master’s in any field with 24 accounting hours.

Responsibilities

• Prepares for audit engagement on entry-level tax audits.
• Establishes audit period; reviews current audit file and prior audit findings.
• Follows established procedures to conduct audits on entry-level tax audits.
• Conducts entrance conference to identify availability of records and to review taxpayer’s accounting system; develops audit plan; tests internal controls; performs reconciliations; inspects books and records for compliance.
• Prepares and presents audit reports conforming to agency policy.
• Verifies data entries and reports; prepares audit schedules with tax projections; documents audit plan and assembles audit package.
• Meets training requirements; prioritizes and organizes assignments; meets deadlines; supports assignments through the redetermination process and hearings.
