Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is seeking Tax Auditor I–III candidates for positions in the Audit Division. The role requires educational credentials in accounting/finance and offers training, travel for training, and opportunities to advance within the department.

Initial in-office training is required with travel to Austin, Dallas, or Houston; teleworking may be permitted after six months. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting; a finance bachelor's or master's degree in business administration with at least 12 hours in accounting courses; or a bachelor's or master's degree in any field with a total of 24 semester hours of accounting.
• One year as Tax Auditor II with the Comptroller of Public Accounts (if applying for higher entry levels).
• One year as Tax Auditor III with Comptroller of Public Accounts (if applying for higher entry levels).
• Licenses/certifications include a Valid Driver's License, Proof of Automobile Insurance, and 36 months of Driving Record.

Responsibilities

• Prepares for audit engagement on entry-level tax audits.
• Establishes audit period; reviews current audit file and prior audit findings per division policy.
• Follows established procedures to conduct audits on entry-level tax audits.
• Conducts entrance conference to identify records and review taxpayer's accounting system and scope of audit.
• Prepares and presents audit reports that conform to agency policy for entry-level audits.
• Verifies data entry accuracy and prepares audit schedules with tax projections.
• Meets training requirements and prioritizes assignments to optimize efficiency.
• Supports assignments through the redetermination process and hearings as needed.

Education

Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting/finance with at least 12 hours in accounting; or bachelor's or master's in business with 12+ accounting hours; or degree in any field with 24 accounting hours
